We wanted you to be among the first to know that starting in March, we’ll be making some changes to our Cash & Points offering. It’s been a member favorite ever since we introduced it to the industry in 2002, and was made even more important with our 2011 announcement of redemption nights counting toward elite and lifetime status.

Knowing this, we’ve worked very closely with our hotels to make some changes that will both improve the availability of Cash & Points and enhance the program overall.

Beginning March 5, Category 1 and 2 hotels worldwide will be included, and you’ll be able to redeem for upgraded room types including suites. In addition, for the first time, we will be updating the Cash & Points pricing on standard rooms to encourage more availability. You can book at the current pricing until March 5th.

Many of you have also asked about our annual Category changes. As with past years any adjustments will take place in early March, and as soon as we have the list we will post it here. Currently we’re estimating mid-February to have this finalized.

To learn more about the upcoming Cash & Points changes, please visit spg.com/C&Pchanges.

Thanks for the advance notice as well as clear outline of what the changes will be. The changes certainly hurt the attractiveness of cash and points for basic redemptions, and as I've previously seen properties make upgraded rooms available at the regular cash and points rate, not necessarily a great improvement there, and possibly just higher redemption rates for the consumer.

    Wow, big devaluation there :(

Will gold and platinum members still be eligible for upgrades from basic rooms on C&P bookings?

Even if I'm not 100% happy with the changes, I have to say I really appreciate the advance notice, especially the way the new C&P page links to the old one so you can easily check out the differences.

While I like the increased options for C+P, the 25% increase in points and avg 21% increase in cash is a big jump in the rate!

there's still some value in a few properties, but now that has dwindled. can't wait to see the properties that are changing levels, too. hilton drew me in more last year, and it looks like they will continue to do so in '13. let's see why hyatt comes up with, too

Indeed. I was really hoping to make SPG Platinum this year, but the numbers so often work out in Hilton's favor. I'm planning a trip to the San Francisco area right now, and so far the scale only tips toward Starwood for one of the nights. And this new C&P structure doesn't look like it will make the balance on this trip better.

Oh well, we'll see how things shake down after we get later into March.

eh i dont think its the end of world ... Starwood gotta keep up with inflation somehow right?

Plus if more properties opens up more rooms @ C&P that's fine & dandy to me

Can honestly say I am extremely unhappy with this decision and may have to re-think my loyalty to SPG. 2013 marks the beginning of my 13th year in the program, with LT Gold, and close to LT Plat, and quite possibly my last. I really don't see the benefit of becoming LT Plat with these changes. Besides devaluing the Plat benefits, the significant increase in both points and cash make SPG just another hotel in the group for me to choose from on my 75+ nights on business travel. SPG has always been head and shoulders above all of the other hotel loyalty programs (IMHO) but that designation was lost with this change to the program

I am a former Hilton Diamond and Marriott Platinum ... it just may be time to say bye-bye to SPG for this member... Time to start exploring Marriott again and maybe Hyatt . :(

Quite the inflation rate they have.

I am not an SPG guy, but I have a small pile of SPG points. Time to look into burning them. At least there's a reasonable warning period being given.

i don't think i'd quit on going ahead and getting lifetime plat at this point.

LT PLT has nothing to do with the increased C&P redemption for the rest of your lifetime...

Although it is a devaluation of the value of an SPG point, one hopes that with the increased points required, and the rates that more hotels will offer them. I've found that fewer and fewer of the nights i want to book have cash and points rooms available. If availability doesn't increase, then this is a big thumbs down. I guess we will wait and see!

The intent is expanded availability which is tough to measure. Would have been nice if the the change included earning points on the cash part.

However, if you have a stash of say, 300K SPG points after working on an international project > 1 yr and spending > $120/nt for weeks on end, you might not be too happy that your points will go 25% shorter and have to pay 20% more for those cash & points redemptions... especially if that was how you were planning on using all of them.

Even if we were to start booking all potential trips for the foreseeable future, we still wouldn't be able to book all our points at the original rates since, alas, we have jobs :(

Despite the upcoming increased cost(s) for C&P, at least those stays still qualify towards status!

one thing i just noticed ... what defines an upgraded room? ... upgrade as in GOLD upgrade (better view, higher floor) or PLT upgrade (Prem/DLX room over the stnd room)

As usual, the properties will decide this based upon their individual inventory, but it will probably mirror what they already have available for Specialty and Specialty Select room upgrades on Free Night Awards.

Fortunately (?). I don't have that problem; my stash is significantly smaller.

I'll probably also go through with my plan to drop the SPG Amex. Too many other mile/point-earning cards to justify the annual fee.

Every time a frequent flyer or guest program devalues miles or points, they claim it's to improve award availability. Ask yourself: after repeated devaluations, are airline and hotel awards dramatically easier to obtain than they were 5, 10, or 15 years ago? Are they easier to obtain at all?

I applaud SPG providing advance notice of this. That's the only possible thing I can applaud about it.

As a Platinum with over 60 nights this past year, I say, SPG, you have to do better. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from a horrible customer experience with one of your hotels last year. This doesn't help. I can status match back to Hyatt or Hilton at any time. At this rate, I might switch to Kimpton, especially if they move into one or two more cities I care about. And my SPG Amex is tenuously holding onto its spot in my wallet. Do you hear me?
