While I love animals, I think this is a logical move. I am also allergic to domesticated mammals and consider this a health matter and not one of convenience!

Canucklehead, I have nothing to contribute to this thread ... but thumbs up on the quote in your signature. Whatever our political allegiances, we have to respect and admire his class and courage to the end.

I see people taking their dogs all over the place in Seattle that are really not appropriate. They take them to shop for clothes. They take them to shop for groceries. They carry a leash (but leave the dog unattached) and let them run into the street and almost get hit by my car...

Seriously, I like animals, and I'm not allergic to anything. But I find it difficult to tolerate people's attitudes toward their pets as though they are small children who can be taken anywhere. Unless you really, absolutely need it for a medical reason, then it belongs in the cargo hold when you're on a plane.

I read a thread on this topic on TOBB yesterday. It certainly got heated!

I'm not allergic to anything so I don't really have a "dog" in this fight, but I have to agree with Scottrick. I see people letting their dogs run around leash-less in airports, carrying them into restaurants where children aren't welcome, feeding them from tables, etc. The worst is when they're kissing them on the mouth. It's a dog, not a child/person. I understand you love your pet, but it's still a pet!

All for service animals being on flights, in restaurants, etc. And all for people enjoying time with their pets in appropriate places!

I've been bashed on another site years ago for having raised that issue. Which is one forcing me me to travel less and picking my airlines carefully (Air France is the worse for allergic people, I got a blunt letter from them saying they won't even change my seat if there is an animal besides me).

Allergies are not a matter of loving animals or not. But when I see people licking their animal I feel strange.

Some developments on this story came out in a CTA ruling re: an allergy sufferer and a dog on her flight.

    www.cbc.ca/kamloops/mt/2013/08/07/search-resumes-for-missing-pilot-near-kamloops/
from the CBC article "The airline has until September 16th to comply with the order."

    https://allergicliving.com/index.php/2013/08/07/cta-issues-dog-allergy-order/

The slight difference with cats in the cabin is in regards to use of service dogs -
"Service dogs are used to aid people with disabilities, and are allowed on planes for this reason. If both an individual allergic to dogs and a person with a service dog want to board the same flight, a conflict may exist. For airplanes which would qualify for a buffer zone, nothing changes, but for those craft which (due to their ventilation systems) would be obligated to impose a ban on dogs in the cabin, seating will be provided on a first come, first served basis. "

    and the actual CTA ruling
