IMHO, not a good move for passengers when this would be implemented by Cathay Pacific! I cannot be the only one who likes back seat AVOD TV screens!:)

While tablets may in fact be popular, I too disagree!

I love the existing setup, but is the removal really going to save weight if everyone's bringing more gear on board?

so they'll remove the IFE, and then keep the same pricing. sounds like a win-win for CX.

i only see this working if, since they claim five or six years from now, there is a large enough server on board to deal with the demand from a couple hundred individuals and free movies you're able to rent. Or an agreement with companies like Netflix, Amazon, DirecTV, etc...

it is nice looking directly in front of you, without straining your neck, to view a screen, tho.

i would say yes due to technology always going the route of "bigger yet lighter". tablets and laptops and even cell phones (see: Galaxy S3 4G (4.8")) are slimming down all the time.

So good technology is, but cutting away the backseat TV while relaxing, not a good idea IMHO! Weight or not!

Well, I think anyone who's ever gotten stuck in those coach seats with the electric box taking up their foot space will be happy! ;)

Well, I am going to bring my gear (tablet) no matter what, and I assume most tablet/laptop owners do the same since onboard usage is only part of the picture. So yes, it will save weight... and other costs such as licensing, maintenance, ... Most of the time the only think I use IFE systems for these days is the map channel. I'd miss that. But I wouldn't miss the big equipment box that some airlines have under the seats.

Exactly! I think airlines should give a discount to folks who get stuck in those seats (as well as the seats that don't recline, e.g. the last row in coach.)

I don't care if the airlines I fly have any kind of IFE whatsoever. The only IFE I need is a book and my iPod. I really don't understand the need for anything else. You can put movies/TV shows on an iPod or a tablet.

I don't have an iPad, and I don't care to watch video on my phone. More to the point, when traveling with family, we don't have four devices to go around (although by the time Cathay implements this in six years, if it happen, we well might).

If they do implement this, I hope they carry enough "loaners" for any bored kids — in fact, it probably wouldn't hurt if airlines started doing the right now.

Of course, I rarely use the IFE at all, preferring to sleep or read, and listen to music (on my phone).

It sounds like it would be BYO content; the only thing served by the airline will be power.

In five years' time, we might well think that this isn't a bad idea. Already there are plenty of people who ignore the airline-provided IFE in favour of their own tablets. No more whingeing about poor screen quality; no more whingeing about poor content choice. If you think back to how the world was merely five years ago, it could seem entirely logical.

I'm pretty agnostic, anyway - I hardly ever use the IFE either.

I bring my own devices anyway, and the screen/sound quality on the IFE systems is poor. Sometimes I start a movie on the seat screen when eating, though. Perhaps I will miss it in these rare situations, because of the challenge by having food on the tray table ANd eat it while holding the iPad :-s

I can see this being a win-win for everyone if
    • Adequate power is provided; 2 low-current sockets per triple in Y is not good enough
    • Content is made available over Wi-Fi; doesn't have to be live Internet - though that would be welcome - just reasonably priced and/or free content streamed from a server
    • Loaners are available in-flight

I do enjoy the IFE because it gives me the chance to watch many foreign movies that I otherwise wouldn't have been aware of, or had the chance to see. So while I still bring my iPad, and wouldn't mind not having IFE, I do get some benefits from it.

I don't own a tablet and would not want to travel with one if I did. I do not take my cell phone, laptop etc. I don't care about free internet when I travel because when I do...I don't want to know about email, etc. I don't want to carry any of that crap...its some of the best part about travel.

I suspect they'd have content and also devices to provide at a price.

I suppose there's always the inflight magazine then :)

For me one of the major benefits of using my iPad -- other than that I can watch what I want -- is that the inflight announcements don't interrupt my movie/music/...
