I have several alerts setup for replies to watched threads, but is there a way to watch and get emails for new posts to a general category? IE I would love to get an email every time someone posted a new topic in the mileage run category (not a reply, but a completely new post).

Aside from email is there any other option I am not thinking of that will accomplish the same thing?

And other than by Twitter feeds?

If you want email notification, then I think ifttt.com could be set up with triggers to notify you of new tweets from the milepoint forum twitter feeds. I'd like to try this.

I was aware of the twitter feeds but often lose them in the mess that is the ba-gillion people I try to follow. ifttt.com may well solve my problem...thanks for the suggestion!

I just saw this thread... I have two recipes, one for tweets from @mp_mileageruns and another for the word "deals" in the rss feed and notify via gtalk, because I sure as hell don't wanna miss anything.

Not too noisy (so far) but it's easy to adjust or turn them off.
