I've got several cards approaching their one year anniversaries in the next few months - does anyone know of a location where it is easy to identify what anniversary bonuses are offered for each card (other than the bank website)? I've looked at the specific websites for each bank, but just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Capital One Venture - $59 fee - No anniversary bonus
Citi Thank You Premier - $125 fee - Free domestic companion airfare and 1-4% annual point bonus

Between these two cards, I'm thinking of downgrading the Venture card to the VentureOne card (no annual fee, 1.25 points per $) and calling to see about getting the fee modified for the Thank You Premier card (based on reports elsewhere on the site). Even if I can't get the Citi fee completely waived, the companion airfare seems like it would be worth retaining the card.

Chase British Airways VISA - $95 fee - No anniversary bonus
Chase Priority Club VISA - $49 fee - Free night certificate
    Chase Southwest VISA - $69 fee - 3,000 points
Chase Marriott Premier VISA - $85 fee - Free Cat. 1-5 certificate

The PC and Marriott bonuses should outweigh the fee. I couldn't find any details on the PC free night certificate, though - does anyone know if that is restricted to certain brands or can it be used at any property? The SW points are only worth about $50, but that at least brings the fee down to a negligible amount. I didn't see anything about a BA anniversary bonus and I don't spend $30,000 per year on that card, so I can't find a justification for keeping that one around. May apply for a different Chase card and if I run into trouble getting it approved, offer up the BA card in exchange.

Have I thought through everything here? What am I missing?

On the PC card, you're missing the 10% point rebate on redemptions in addition to the free night. With my spending and travel habits, each of those two features individually more than justify the annual fee.

No - presumably I wouldn't qualify for the bonus again since I just got it last year, though if someone has other information that would make the decision much easier.

I just don't put enough spend on that card to justify paying the fee. Someone calculated the breakeven on the fee compared to the additional 0.75 points per $ and it worked out to about $7,500 annual spend. My annual spend on that card is probably closer to $1,000, so I can't justify the fee. Since there is a no-fee option, it seems like it'd be pretty easy just to switch to that so that I don't have to just order a couple gift cards to use the few points that still remain in my rewards account.

i stranded 500 points in my account when i closed it the other day. i just felt it to be worthwhile to close in case i would qualify again, or at least apply for the business card if that was possible, too. who really knows, tho?!?!

C1 - I was able to downgrade to the CapOne Cash Card (fee-free) which gives 1.5% cash back (1% + 50% year end bonus)

Priority Club - You can redeem the free night certificate wherever there's award night availability (there may be a few exceptions, but even if you just used it at a $100 Holiday Inn it's still a great value)

I used mine at the Crowne Plaza Amsterdam City Centre - easily a couple hundred dollar redemption.

I have tried twice to downgrade CapitalOne cards and each time they make it seem like it's impossible and only give me the option to cancel. Other issuers don't seem to have a problem with card conversion. Is there a trick to it?

Hmmm, you're the second person on MP who said they couldn't convert. Perhaps it's because I have a history with CapOne? I've heard some card issuers won't convert accounts that are less than a year old or that have limited use. Maybe CapOne is one of those issuers?

I was able to downgrade from Capital One Venture to VentureOne (no fee). I used the Venture card only to meet the minimum requirement for the 100,000 miles. It was in the drawer until I called them to downgrade because of the annual fee. When I called, the CSR didn't ask any questions. She just downgraded it for me (although in CapOne lingo, I was "upgraded" to the VentureOne card).

I had a good chuckle on that one too. I was also "upgraded" :)

For Cap1, do we need to ask for downgrade before the annual fee hits? or can we do it, say within 30 days after fee comes out on statement, and then call for fee reversal and then downgrade? I've been told once of each story..

I downgraded as soon as I saw a notice on my statement that an annual fee would be charged in the following statement. To answer your question, I saw this on the back of the statement:

"How can I Avoid Membership Fees? If a Renewal Notice is printed on the front of this statement, you may avoid
paying an annual membership fee by contacting Customer Service no more than 45 days after the last day in the billing cycle covered by this statement to request that we close your account. To avoid paying a monthly membership fee, contact Customer Service anytime to request that we close your account, and we will stop assessing your monthly membership fee."

Just called to "upgrade" my card to the VentureOne to avoid the annual fee. It was definitely "no hassle." The entire conversation lasted about three minutes and the representative assumed correctly that it was to avoid the $59 fee.

She did say that by "upgrading" my card, I would not be eligible to participate in promotions with CapitalOne for the next six months.

They also told me that I wouldn't be eligible for Capital One promotions for six months when I "upgraded", but I asked for clarification. They said that I was only restricted from promotions on the account that I "upgraded". If I open a new account, I would still be eligible for any applicable bonus.

Of course, take this as you will because I have found credit card customer service reps to not always provide the most accurate information. If you are looking to participate in any upcoming promotions though, it might be worth looking in to.

Still deciding to go for Capital One VentureOne or Cash card... VentureOne miles awarded as soon as transactions post, Cash need to wait till card anniversary... 1.25% vs 1.5%... hmmm.... thoughts?

I have not called in about Chase BA yet. I just applied for the Chase Hyatt Visa so I wanted to save the BA Visa as trade bait, if needed, and I'm about to book a few award flights using my Avios so I was going to put the taxes on my BA card. I didn't apply for the BA until the bitter end of the offer last year, so I have until the beginning of May before my card renews. I'll probably call in a couple weeks once I have the Hyatt Visa and my award flights secured.

If someone does call and has any tips, that'd be great to know!

I didn't really consider the Capital One cash card, but easily "upgraded" my Venture card to the VentureOne last week.

I think I recall having my BA annual fee hit 05/01/11, so I think it'd be the same date this year if I keep it. Waiting for this statement to close (to get the miles), then going to call about closing and getting a retention bonus. I've heard reports of 5000 Avios. Of course, I don't really want to close it, and would gladly trade it in for the UA card if I can't get anything out of it.

I know it sounds like a weird benefit, but I'm a fan of the BA Michelin Dining credits they have in NYC. They had one in the fall and have one going right now. I've gotten $150 in dining credits back, which are more than the annual fee, but I doubt I would have spent that much if it hadn't been for the promotion. Also, no guarantees that they will continue that promotion every year.

    Chase BA data point:

Annual fee due next month, called today and really pressed to cancel the card. Specialist told me a bunch of benefits of the card that I didn't know existed, but still was hesitant about keeping it. No miles but was offered $95 statement credit to keep the card. Not a big spender, probably about $8K on this card in the last year including the $2500 signup spend, but I did spend about $2K in the last 2 months on BA award redemptions + foreign purchases.

For anyone who has been told they'd receive a statement credit, how long does it take? Rep told me within 30 days ...

Edit 3/28: More data ... the statement credit took only 4 days. Wow! If I close it out before the next statement, my 100K bonus will be free :)

Any more Chase BA retention data points? I've been putting it off and am prepping to make a call. I get nervous with these calls. I haven't made much charges on it, probably around 3k~5k total, wonder what I'll get offered.

    I have:
    Capital One Venture
    Chase Priority Club VISA
    Chase Marriott Premier VISA
    AmEx Platinum

C1 is my main card. AmEx is for lounges and accidental spend. Chase cards are for spend at those hotels. I got 100K signup bonus with C1 (plus another 10K for initial spend), so I can't complain. :D

I got 5k Avios too. For those who got the points, how long did it take to post? Did it come out with the next upcoming statement or mid-statement?
