Can you transfer Membership Rewards to someone else's Aeroplan account?

My dad has 78,800 Aeroplan points. I want to to transfer 1,200 Amex Canada Membership Rewards points under my name to top-up his account to 80,000 for a reward.

I've read in other threads that you can transfer Membership Rewards to an Aeroplan account belonging to someone else.

However, I got this warning below when it asked for the Aeroplan number: "the details must match those held by the program you have linked." First name and last name are auto-filled with my name and are not editable.

Can anyone confirm a successful transfer of Amex Canada's Membership Rewards (i.e. membershiprewards.ca) to someone else's Aeroplan account. If so, did you see this warning when you linked an account?

Most of the discussion you read is about the US Membership Rewards program. When linking accounts under that program the name is not auto-filled. Is an uneditable name something that everyone else experiences when linking accounts through the Canadian Amex program?

It might be easier to transfer some Aeroplan miles...yes it will cost you 2 cents a mile, but it's your dad, I'm sure he's worth it.

Agreed. And for 1200 miles, it's only $24!

I was inquiring more for future reference since I'd want to transfer bigger point balances.

If you're looking for the future, give it a try with a 1,000 points and see what happens. And report back here!

I tried this with my wife, and apparently the CSR said it was not possible. YMMV though.

  8. You can always buy AE points and transfer them to someone else's account...its the price that varies.

I have transferred Amex points into my Wife's account. No problems doing so. You will have no issues!

    My 1st post! Yay:)

    Did your last name match?

I have transfered between brothers (same last name) and accounts got "accepted" almost immediately
This is for both Aeroplan and BA Avios.

I'm curious to whether we can transfer to ANYONE though?

Last name was the same. So I guess that might be the "kicker" on transferring points!

Seems like one can only have 1 type of account to 1 AMEX MR account (e.g. 1 MR account can only 1 Aeroplan account linked)

I tried to add a new Aeroplan to my AMEX MR and it's not seen in the dropdown
otherwise I was gonna try to add my wife (different last name) to test

I guess one needs to call AMEX MR to delete the link and re-add

I can confirm transfer to same last name.

I was able to call Amex to delete link and re-add, although I don't know how many times they will let me do this in the future.
