    Hi,
Must say, I LOVE the new user interface on milepoint.

Since this is a 'fresh start' --- why NOT ban/limit stupid (I know, defined by me) threads that don't really foster community and/or just limit them to one (main) thread.

After seeing a "count backwards from 123456" thread, my first reaction was OH NO; now we are going to have these silly game threads again.

Now, I will admit, I have a bias with regard to "Lounge Threads"; but I feel those are designed to foster community among members. Not really sure that a "counting thread" does the same thing, and it encourages LOTS of additional nonsense posts.

    Anyway, just my 2 cents.

    Cheers! --- Michael

10's of threads ongoing already about this topic - drop into one of them and let them know how you really feel ;)

    Michael,

Good to see you here on MP; pull up a chair and a drink and enjoy the place.
The nice thing about those threads is, you can indentify them easily by their titles- if you see a thread you don't like, just don't open it.

Some of them even develop the same type of banter and exchange of personalities that we have found in lounge threads, just in a different pace and format. Some people like baccarat, some like pinball machines. We're a large casino here, lots of room for all of them; it's not like a smokey little bar where the noisy pinball machine is hanging over the poker table getting in the way.

So enjoy, and dont' worry- it will all settle itself and settle down soon enough.

Fair enough. I guess, what drives me crazy is the creation of LOTS of additional threads like that. It would be equivalent to having 30 Delta Lounge threads in the Delta Forum. You have to admit, that would get pretty confusing (and annoying).

I could understand ONE 'master' counting thread, just not many different ones
    count down from 123456
    count up from 100000
count in multiples of 2 from 9999

Anyway, I guess we all have our 'personal' pet peeves.

If I can sit an play big baccarat for 10 hours straight, it is fair to assume some people can sit and continually post numbers counting up to 1,000,000 for 10 hours straight. Insanity, is in the eye of the beholder. :)

I guess I just don't get it. LOL

The odds of a big payoff are much better in the counting threads.

How should we define a thread that don't foster community? I actually made some friends in the number threads

A thread that does not foster community is a dead thread - nothing happening ... all threads foster community ... it is some in the community that do not foster community ... Kitty 2011

First, I think they're a waste of time.

But second, how can you possibly ban threads that help people get status points quickly and easily, on a forum that is, in part, dedicated to helping people get travel points quickly and easily?

If you're here for the latter, you're likely to be interested in the former. I stay away from those threads (once I learned what they were all about) but I check my status points pretty often.

Points are points - even if they're useless!

    All good points about points.

My use of the word BAN was probably not accurate.
Alternatively, I think it's more of a LIMIT thing, IMHO.

Probably is no happy-medium with regard to defining what is/isn't useful and/or community building.

I guess, multiple posts in a row that are just :
    15000
    15001
    15002
    15003
    15004
    15005
can't possibly be considered a good use of bandwidth... but, I have no idea how one limits such things; without limiting the 'good' aspects.

You are forgetting one important thing these past weeks... we have been in beta -- and a key point during that time was to stress the system and find glitches and issues ...

As long as "silly game threads" does not include or even remotely refer to Mornington Crescent which is not just about travel and community; it embodies, strategy, wit, inspiration, and sometimes even spelling!

IMO - our post count/MP status points should mean something.

The more members I see with high MP status and 0 meaningful contribution to travel, the less likely I am to stick around and post knowledge based travel information here.

I have no problem with meaningless threads so long as they do not give someone "status" on MP.

Otoh, that plays to the entire concept of working the points system. I note your avatar- 450k miles from Kelloggs, which may well have granted status without flying. I've seen people gripe about that sort of thing, but imho it's a completely valid way to work within the rules.

So, the reall issue is- we're still in beta, they're testing the system and determining the rules, and this gives a good chance to examine it. If we come out of beta with 15 or 20 members over 10k points, and that helps the admins define the system and write the rules so that it works differently in the future, well, that's the whole intention. In a year, when there are 80k members, the status of fifteen or twenty won't amount to a hill of beans.

Just take away the external incentive, and the threads will
die down to their normal level.

I got kind of bored of the countdown thread, but I kind of like the one where you post a picture of the number. I like a lot of the pictures people come up with, which makes me want to find more interesting pictures myself. The prime number thread was fine until I had to start resorting to google, so I backed on out of that one LOL
