I've successfully exchanged SPG points for miles in my various airline miles accounts. And I am certain that many her have done the same.

Was wondering if transfers can be made from my SPG account to third persons' miles accounts. There would be no identity of address, name, nothing.

    It depends.
To some airlines names total mismatching will post, others, last names must match, while to others both names must match.

If I recall correctly, SPG has a option to enter a name for the account in which the miles are being transferred. I have successfully transferred SPG points to family & friends accounts numerous times (mostly with Delta & LAN).

Same last name should go through.

Totally different names, a call can push it through although its a big YMMV.

Worst case, the points go back to the original account. But they are tied up throughout the process.

But extremely accurate in this particular instance.

And contrary to personal experience. YMMV I guess...

Either way, wouldn't rely on it happening.

LOL. Well, I hope you went out and bought a lottery ticket on that day. My personal experience is that AA rejects these on a 99.9% basis.

It would be interesting to see when some of the personal experiences of transferring SPG points to acounts to non matching names.
If memory serves sometime (earlier this year or late 2010???) Starwood put in place what appeared to be a review procedure apparently reduce fraud (and possibly other intents/reasons) in the transfer of points and there has been a delay of 7 days?? before the transfer was completed.
It wouldnt be a stretch to assume this included name matching would it? :)

This was related to internal transfers between members, not to the airlines. The airlines do a pretty good job of policing transfers into their programs from their end, if they are interested in doing so.

Sent my wife's SPG points to my US account during a promo earlier this summer. Wife and I do not share last names though we do share an address.

I know we can share SPG points by reason of same address but at the time I made the redemption there was only a day or two left in the US promotion for a 75% bonus. No time to wait for the SPG internal transfer before submitting to US. I got lucky. :)

SPG>US will transfer with mismatched names.

Some speculate that the US grand slam promo had to do with SPG cracking down...

They do and I do not understand why any program cares if the name matches. They get paid the same either way.

Sure, as long as the transfer isn't fraudulent. They get to pay out twice if it is, so I can't believe that every airline doesn't care enough to insist on the same name.

It takes 2 weeks most the time to transfer points and Starwood sends an email to the email address on file. If someone ignores the email and does not check their account online and then lets someone book a ticket who must put their legal name and date of birth pn the ticket. Then by all means let the thief fly we know his name and date of birth. In the mean time for the rest of us stop punishing our friends and family when we want to help them out.

Sorry, but that isn't SPG's call to make. But, I do know that liability from fraud is what is driving the airlines' decisions on this.
