The Red Cross is seeking donations to help the flood victims
Donations of drinking water, cleaning materials, sanitary products and non-perishable food items are being collected to aid those affected by the recent flooding in Rio de Janeiro state.
Anybody currently visiting Rio de Janeiro is urged to spare a little time and effort to take donations to the designated Red Cross and Social Services points in Centro, Botafogo and Laranjeiras.
The items being sought will go directly to victims of the floods, and include non-perishable food items such as rice, beans, dried pasta, coffee powder, sugar, biscuits and, perhaps most importantly, drinking water.
Cleaning products such as brooms and brushes, detergent, soap powder and floor cloths are also needed, as are personal hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, hair brushes, sanitary towels and tampons, disposable nappies, soap, shampoo and conditioner.
Donations of new (or very clean) bed clothes and towels are also welcomed.
Donations to help the flood victims are being accepted at the following addresses, between 9am and 5pm daily:
Rodoviaria Novo Rio (main bus/coach terminal), 1st floor
Red Cross, Praca Cruz Vermelha 10, Centro
Servicos Social de Industria (SESI) Rua Esteves Junior 47, Laranjeiras
    SESI, Rua Ipiringa 75, Laranjeiras
    SESI, Rua Bambina 37, Botafogo
Meanwhile, three days of national mourning have been declared in Rio, to honor the hundreds who have lost their lives in the floods.
