It just occurred to me that if credit cards and online shopping malls can buy billions of air miles at (presumably) deeply discounted prices, couldn't collections of individuals do the same thing?

Specifically, could we harness the spending power of milepoint members and buy some really cheap miles for ourselves? :)

Probably, but how do we spend them collectively? ;) though that would be a great idea if we could donate them to worthy causes for cheaper!

Why couldn't you use them for yourself? Let's say 100 MPers get together and start a paperclip membership business that then approaches UA to buy 100 million miles... Would they sell it at a good rate, and could the business then sell a box of paperclips and reward it with a million miles?

That is exactly what I was thinking :D

It would be like the Dividend Miles Grand Slam, except you don't really have to do anything to get the hits :p

Would the airlines accept their branded business cards for our paperclip club to buy these miles?

Also - how will the club decide which airline to approach first?

I would suggest either AA or US. AA's stock has been hit real hard and they could really use the cash. US has been very open at selling miles, status, ad-space in first, etc. They would probably entertain it first and have a great redemptions to Asia.

Maybe instead of paper clips we could start a competitor to TrackItBack. Let's keep it low-tech, though - instead of providing stickers with serial numbers and rewards, our stickers provide the buyer with a little space to fill in their own phone number. :D

Because generally the program T&Cs prohibit that.

So my wife starts the company and I promise not to let her benefit from any of the miles. ;)

Seriously, though -- I am sure folks would have already done this if it was easily possible.

Exactly. I thought about this back in April when the Million Miler program seemed likely to change in the near future. The problem is that in order to bulk-purchase for some promotion, you have to run the promotion by AA for approval. I think if I had been particularly industrious and clever I might have been able to come up with something but the risks outweigh the reward.

Maybe just buy AA outright if the share price gets low enough.

600 MPers putting up a million dollars each? :) Free flights in F for life (of AA).

Are the T&Cs publicly available? Does anyone have insider knowledge of how they work?

Start here and click the red link at the bottom of the page.

There may be other programs out there to allow a company to purchase massive volumes of points at a favorable rate but I doubt they are going to be open to the likes of us.

Delta charges businesses 2.2 cents per mile. Not sure about restrictions. Where cheaper than buying individually, certainly not a steal. Friend bought 100,000 miles for business and award himself as top salesman all of them. Used them for a BC seat to Europe. So seat cost $2,200. Advance purchase seats often available for about that.

So, using the havemileswilltravel paper-clip example, are you saying there is a "clipping penalty?"

That is very disappointing. I had an image of miles costing less than $0.01. Surely the big companies can't be paying those prices?

Considering how often Delta runs promotions for double Skymiles for purchased or transferred miles, I think your friend was robbed.
