Because I am willing to be the one to ask.

So this is a "share". In order to share 50k with someone you have to have 50k to share....right? So if I only have 40k, I can share that with my partner who would receive 80k. He could then share back to me 50k which would leave me with 100k total (since I shared my only 43k I had). He would be left with 40k. The total transaction would be roughly $900 + some fees.

Please clarify if I am off base.

    :D

Assuming your SO started with no miles, he'd be left with 30K at the end and you'd have 100K. You would have turned 40K miles into 130K, gaining 90K in the process, and the price as you described..

LOL apparently my math sucks. Yeah, he would have the 30k you stated.

This is a nice offer, looks like the one which was run last year.

    Happy days

Everyone, remember that last time this promotion ran, USAir confiscated miles from some people who setup sham accounts with which to share. It's better to share with well established accounts. For me it works out well because my wife and I both have over 50K miles in our accounts.

Debating whether to jump on this or not. I don't have any firm plans for travel within a year but know that I will be going to Asia in a 6mo-2yr timeframe depending on how things work out. We would like to go in business class so this is very tempting to me.

    Is it worth buying speculatively?

Only you can make the determination if it is worth buying the points. However, this is about the cheapest that you will see the points, without manufactured spending.

This is a no brainer ... just pulled the trigger & shared 50K with the wife who returned the favor immediately - total gain: 100K miles for $1,135 for a total combined balance of 342K in both accounts. We need 360K-480K (YMMV) to fly the whole family of 4 to Asia for the holidays! :)

So what is the boards consensus on the "fair" value of an airline mile...?

From this thread, it would appear that less than 1.5 cents per mile is a clear buy.... does this mean that a fair value, whatever that means is somewhere between 1.25 to 1.75 cents per mile...?

my buddy just asked me the same exact question. We have our own FB points group to share and learn. I came to a similar conclusion but then i asked myself the other way. If there were no violations of T&C, at what price point would I sell? I don't think I would sell at any point in that range. So does that mean for me, my fair market value is much higher? ::confused

The US Air miles are worth around $16 per 1000 (or, 1.6 cents each), but you might be able to get a higher redemption value from them ... unfortunately, this offer was over last week! :(

I went for the offer but in some ways wish I hadn't.
USAir availability at regular / saver award levels is woeful.

I think most bought it with the purpose of an international award redemption and in particular the North Asia sweetspot. It probably can still be an okay redemption for domestic on UA.

Looks like a good deal now if you're wanting to plan any AA/OW travel late next year. That's the general guess for merging program/sharing miles/booking from one to the other. Significantly cheaper than purchasing AA miles.

fingers crossed the programme if AA switches to OW, not to be devalued much, devaluation seems to be the name of the game for most hotel and airline programmes these past 2 months...:(

My account definitely qualifies and I've 30K+ miles in there. Unfortunately, the SO hadn't opened an account. I created one on her behalf, but it looks like we'll miss this deal.

    :'-(

A very good opportunity if you can take advantage of it.

Update: I found a very nice commenter via the @mommypoints blog who was in a similar position. We both now have 50k more points in our accounts! :)
