Everyone knows the sinking feeling of arriving at a Hertz (HTZ) or an Avis (CAR) or an Enterprise, only to learn that all the premium cars are taken. Inevitably you’re stuck with a plum-colored PT Cruiser, those odd little Chryslers that for the past decade have populated rental car outlets across the country. “They’re just so awful,” says Stephanie Springer, a former research associate at a large biotech company in Boston.

Springer and her colleagues once visited Los Angeles and were issued a whole fleet of PT Cruisers. “We ended up carpooling because the people who had PT Cruisers refused to use them,” she says.

How sad. Next the Chevrolet HHR will go. How lucky I am that I have never ridden in, much less driven, either of these monstrosities.

Funny enough, I know at least three people who own a PT Cruiser, and one of them bought it after having it as a rental.

The otherwise very intelligent Colin Powell is not only a deeply committed Volvo PV544 maven, he also owned a PT Cruiser when they first came out.

LOL! It's great to know some others share the dislike. The odd shape inside the cabin and dashboard is annoying and horrible gas mileage.
It seems to accumulate smells and has a weird acceleration feel to it.

The Yugo had MUCH better mileage, primarily due to the owner pushing the car 5 days out of 7. ;)

I got the other way last week in San Diego. Couldn't get the Fusion I wanted; was offered a BMW 325i instead. Could have even had a 525i, but I wanted to see if the 325i was a smaller car than I would like to own because I have this desire to own a good German car...

Nice upgrade. Very fun car to have in San Diego.

I had one of these POS in LAS about seven yrs ago. My boss and I both had flown in with our clubs and could barely fit our luggage and clubs in the back with the rear seats folded flat. I guess the PT can take over the mantel from the Gremlin as one waste of engineering and design.

    HHR is for sure worse.

I did actually enjoy a PT cruiser rental a few times, when it was a convertible. In a place with nice weather, when it is cold in Chicago, give me any drop top (including the PT) and I'll be happy to feel the sun/wind/warm breeze on my face, performance/looks of car be damned.

No way would I rent a hard top PT or HHR, unless the price was right (which it has been a few times ($~7 a day)).

My wife has a Pt cruiser that was bought new in 2002. The car does not have much power and it is usually only for taking the dogs and cats to the vet nowadays, but the car has not had many problems in the 11 years that we have had it.

I personally don't like the car, but the wife wanted one and we certainly have gotten our money out of it in 11 years.

I once saw a Prius getting flatbedded out of the Hamptons and I couldn't figure out -- was it getting really great gas mileage, or really lousy mileage?

Trufax: my divorced parents both own and use PT Cruisers as daily drivers.

No, not so much. But they went out and bought the same car model without knowing it.
