Stephen Turner, 56, had just boarded the single-decker with wife Janice, 54, when he saw the driver slump forward as the bus reached the top of a steep hill.

The bus, with six other passengers on board, picked up speed on the descent and began hurtling towards a traffic light junction.

Dad-of-three Stephen leant over the unconscious driver, grabbed the wheel and steered round oncoming vehicles and pedestrians – like the hero in the film Speed.

He could not reach the foot brake but managed to guide the bus to a safe stop against bushes at the roadside.

The storeman, who was on the No 341 Stocksmoor to Huddersfield bus in West Yorkshire, said: “The driver was leaning over, then there was a judder as we caught the kerb and he slumped even further into the aisle.

“I was closest and we were going down the bank and I knew I had to stop it before we went through the lights at the bottom.

“I just did what came instinctively.”

He added: “I didn’t have time to look behind me to see how the passengers were but thankfully everyone was OK. It was very lucky. When the driver came round he had no idea what had happened and his eyes were glazed.”

After speaking to police, Stephen and Janice jumped on another bus to continue their journey.

Martin Gilbert, spokesman for Yorkshire Tiger buses, said: “We express our huge appreciation to Stephen for his quick-thinking.”
