Just called United to upgrade my wife on an upcoming trip booked via United Vacations. I was planning to burn my remaining RPU/GPUs. The reservation shows in united.com as "eligible for CPU". But the agent tells me that it's a "bulk ticket" and thus cannot be upgraded with the RPU/GPU.

A case of HUCA? Or a rarely-talked-about fare rule that I of course cannot verify since united.com doesn't show the fare rules for existing tickets?

Have not read the entire 6 pages of the referenced FT thread far but the very first post states it is okay for upgrades if purchased through United Vacations which is your situation right?

Yes, I saw that, but that was two+ years ago... not sure if it still applies. I will try another agent, but I doubt that "I read on Flyertalk that United Vacations is okay" will be very convincing if all they go by is the "BULK" fare indicator.

When all else fails, follow the lead from small children! Ask a different parent until you get the answer you want or run out of time.

I hit a similar snag this summer with a "real" bulk ticket. Could not get the GPU applied even after it split from the group. A shame that UA treats UA Vacations that way, though the reality is it is just a contract TA who licenses the branding.

I had an UA bulk ticket once from United Vacations and called UA to "upfare" the ticket and that changed the bulk ticket to an normal ticket so I was able to upgrade it thankfully.

And what did the upfare cost? In particular, does it involve change fees?

(just curious; I am not going to actually spend another dime on this. Would rather let the remaining certs go to waste than pay to enter the upgrade lottery)

It cost me $275.00 RT to go from G to W (IAD-CDG) at the time and the change fee was waived without me asking that time. :)

FWIW, official policy is to charge a change fee within the same ticketed cabin. Not all agents do and some will waive it if asked. But official policy is that it should be charged last I checked.

    Right, that's what I thought.

The pax on my booking have exit row, so there is not much too be gained by spending the HUCA game.

The whole thing with United Vacation BULK tickets just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and is perhaps the "appropriate" end of my 1K career (together with the Hertz story)

So in the end all four legs got upgraded via CPU and zero PDQ were earned. Doesn't matter since we're not aiming for status beyond UA MM Gold, but let it be a warning for those who do chase PQDs that United Vacations isn't the place to buy airplane tickets. The savings were minimal.

It can vary wildly. I've had situations where the "Vacations" package would have access to much lower fare buckets without the advance purchase requirements. But that's more a close-in purchase thing.

Yes, in this case it was several months advance purchase.
