|| BREAKING NEWS: Several people shot outside Empire State Building ||
fortunately only one victim died as did the shooter. Several other were injured. New York is going to get a black eye with the problems lately. It really is a shame for such a great city.
Good thing they couldn't throw a large soda.
Well gun violence is nothing new to NYC, unfortunately, but incidents like this (because of the location) get the air time. There have been numerous cases of gun-related violence in all the boroughs this year, whether it's a random shooting at a club, a basketball game dispute gone out of control or a robbery. Most of these will be below the fold -- assuming they even make the front page -- unless the media can sensationalize them.
In this particular case it turns out to be a simple "guy got fired, guy went crazy and came back to shoot his boss" type of thing, but because of the location all of the sudden it draws (more) attention to the very real gun problem in the city. This wasn't even related to the Empire State Building, but that's what they're highlighting as well. The guy worked across the street on the south side, on 33rd street, but of course the original story was that it was a dozen dead from some deranged gunman -- when it reality he killed his former boss and was killed himself in turn by NYPD.
Two dead, nine injured. Tragic to be sure, but one of the best case scenarios... I can stand on any corner in midtown and swing a cat and hit 63 people easily, so this could have gone very, very badly indeed.
