Sounds like the "ultimate backpacker nightmare" to me.

The Jan 7 story in their hometown newspaper, Jackson Hole News and Guide reports the story quite differently:

    http://www.jhnewsandguide.com/article.php?art_id=9416

“The calls to government officials and to the American Embassy in Peru have been a tremendous help to get things moving on our end,” Doherty said Friday in a blog post. “They are kicking ass trying to [take] care of our needs right now.”

    ...

Interesting also that the backpackers were traveling with a truck that they are trying to recover.

There is probably more to this story than what is being reported. RoadBlocks to keep them from leaving? They were asked for their papers. Did they cooperate with the authorities or were they "Ugly Americans" .

I am still out on who was right on this story.
