So here's the dilemma: Mrs YULtide and I want to travel to HKG in November. We have firm dates that we want to travel. We would like to book T+ fares and try for upgrades on at least one TPAC crossing. The trouble is that with the new T fares, the T+ fares seem to be much higher than before. So, the question is, should we take what we can get now, or wait in the hope that the T+ fares will come down?

Any and all advice gratefully received.

And worse, T+ doesn't guarantee upgrade

This is a difficult one I agree. I know of one who waited until days before and still did not get T+ fares ... it is crazy :(

Assuming the fares you're seeing are part of the current AC Asia sale which is on now, as I noticed earlier today here, waiting until after the sale ends 31st Aug. may see it rise in price. Waiting until closer to departure for another sale to come along that's better than what's there now is a crap shot so MHO would be to book now.

For approx $3600 would it be better to book UA or BR Z class instead?

True, though at least you get 100% status miles, which I will need to maintain status in the new 5-tier universe.

The Asia sale fares look pretty nice, but they are Tango fares. But you're right about the crap shoot. T+ fares did drop $25 each way this week. Who knows what they'll do next week.

Definitely an option. It would mean abandoning the hope of an upgrade, though it would give the status miles that I need.

but if you do United Z fare at $3500, you are in a confirmed J seat!
But Z does not give you COS bonus (which is the same as Tango Plus on an eupgrade)

Sorry, read too quickly on the fare class. I can see a United Z fare at $5232 each for our dates. Way more than the AC T+ fare of $4100 for two.

Hmm that sucks, I guess to get the cheaper seats u need to be time flexible. If Z inventory is available, have you checked TA rates?

Dilemma solved. I booked United class K, which will give us no upgrade possibility, but full status miles. C$1,958.32 all in for two. Less than half the price of AC T+, and less even than the advertised special T fares.

Thanks to everyone for all your input.

See if you go into UA with your booking reference whether they will offer you upgrade for $$$. I believe its approx $950 for the long haul segment (per direction). This will then be booked into Z class

Thanks for the tip. Just now they are offering to upgrade the whole itinerary for $6700 per person, which is more than purchasing Z class outright would have been. But I'll check and see if the price changes over the next several days.

Worst case scenario is we get to HKG for a good price with full miles. Not bad, all in all.

This is what I ended up doing for my YYZ-NRT-YYZ at the beginning of September. UA K was within $20 of Tango, so I'll put up with UA Y (or Y+ if I get lucky) in order to get the status miles. About 16K miles compared to 6401 for the Tango option, it may make all the difference at the end of the year.

It should make the difference between Tier 2 and Tier 3 status (whatever they are going to be called) for me for 2013. And to compensate for UA Y, we're taking a side trip from HKG for a few days on TG in J, which will give us a chance to check out the J service on an A380. (Gotta use up those points before they expire!)

out of curiosity, did you check the fares for W (upgradable using GPUs on United)?

No, but I don't have GPUs so it wouldn't matter.
