Has anyone used Bing.com to search for airfares and followed their predictor enough to have an idea of how accurate it is?

I have followed fares with the Bing predictor about a dozen times. If it said the fare was too high and had a 70% chance of dropping - it did. Too low, each time it did go up. However, there have been a couple of times it was close to 50% and just as that may seem to indicate, the price went up or down.

It is a great tool to get a rough feel. I would not stake a trip on it Better to set an alert on the likes of Yapta and when your trigger hits - buy!

Speaking of Yapta; what else are MP'ers using?

Microsoft incorporated Farecast into Bing after they bought them a few years back, and Farecast itself had independent reviews showing that it was about 75% accurate in predicting prices.

It's supposed to be a mash-up of historical data (which doesn't seem to matter much nowadays since we have crazy swings due to fuel prices) and ITA software, but I think it's better than nothing when you're planning a new trip and you have no idea whether or not you should buy now or later.

    Thanks!

Right, I think I saw the 75% somewhere too. For my master's project in computer science, I was thinking about doing a prediction model similar but with addition to text mining in related news that hopefully would take fuel prices, promo sales, etc into account.

Hey if you can do it, more power to you... the hotmail guys just put their stuff together, and next thing you know Microsoft came knocking with a $400 million check. :)

Same thing for Farecast... I think MS paid $75 million to acquire them. :)

I've bing search a handful of times to watch flight pricing. Sometimes it sends me emails with a low price and when I check the site, its for a triple-stop flight. But it gives me an idea of to buy/wait if I'm looking for a certain price point.

I've had mixed results with the Bing predictor and have since given up on it. I was hopeful at first but it just didn't seem all that reliable.

Oooh...how are you planning to go about doing this? (It's ok if you don't want to tell the details, just a general overview would be fine :))

No idea yet. I'm still in the pre-proposal stage. Yes, they make us to a PRE-proposal.

Surprisingly, not that many, thus the motivation to enhance existing methods

How frustrating :( I guess its because this sort of this makes money. Plus Bing's method takes quite a bit of time....
