A Scottish airline has won a contract to operate the world’s shortest flight, on a route in the Orkney Islands where journeys can last as little as 47 seconds.

The regional airline Loganair will continue to operate flights between Westray and Papa Westray islands, fending off competition from two rival operators.

The distance between the two locations stands at slightly more than a mile, and can be travelled in as little as 47 seconds depending on the direction of the wind.

The Scottish airline has been running the flight since the start of its inter-island service in the region in 1967. The flight between Westray and Papa Westray is currently priced at £21 return.

probably pretty cheap on a dollars per segment basis, but extremely expensive on a dollars per flight hour basis.

If 500 mile minimum applied, this would be probably increase mileage running tourism to the area enough to justifiy having the 500 mile minimum :) I can imagine a "frequent flyer bar/inn" on each side of the route, where people get together and retell stories of that one guy that flew 80 times in one day just to top up to a Gold.

I'm still trying to understand why three carriers are fighting over the route.

Probably a good pay off per hour of equipment spent. Plus, built-in (and free!) advertisement as the shortest route!

How many round trips a day could a crew do before they time out?

Why do they fly this route rather than a ferry or even a bridge?

Heck, in Europe, they probably could serve a hot meal on a flight of this length.

Or just abandon that island? Those who want to stay can swim :D

The article actually does mention a ferry service:

"The eight-seat Islander aircraft has also transported pupils from Papa Westray to Westray Junior High in 2009, when the ferry service between the islands was withheld during its refurbishment."

So perhaps the flight is for those in a hurry?

I imagine that it is way faster and the price is probably not that different. I could check, but got a pear cider in me, so hopefully someone else can verify it :)

Well, I have been served roast lamb on a one-hour gate-to-gate flight on Finnair (FA even wore nice gloves for it) but I think 80 seconds would be tough. On my flight there was no delay between when the FA finished serving the last row of J and when she started clearing stuff from the first row.

Can you even get the Biscoffs out of the package without breaking them on a flight that short?

I've had similar experiences on AY. Also on RJ J service between BRU and LCY over the years.

This flight only runs one round trip a day, so not the best way to run segments.

As for in-flight service... in 2001 when I flew YVR-YYJ and back, we got a mint on the 27-mile flight. Then again we weren't exactly in the air very long.

That's more than some airlines give intercontinental flights nowadays.
