Betrayal: English theatre in Rome

  1. One of Rome’s lesser known facts is that it has a vibrant theatre scene with musical, lyrical, dance and drama performances through the year. As a rule, I am a glutton for musical theatre and never miss Tutti Insieme Appassionatamente (Italian version of The Sound of Music) when performed in Rome, and yes, I am always first in line for Lo Schiaccianoci (The Nutcracker) no matter how avant-garde (and subsequently ghastly) the performance.
    That said, translation, whether literal or conceptual, has the power to make or break theatre. If in Rome and looking to wipe off some lost in translation nervousness, running now through Sunday March 20 is Harold Pinter’s play “Betrayal”, an entirely in English production by the Independent English Theatre, performed at the Teatro dell’Orologio, in Piazza dell’Orologio by Piazza Navona.
