    Hi,

I'm sure there are many in the same boat as me. We become ambassadors, but would like to step up to the next level, but don't have contacts for the nominating certificates and don't want to buy online and be scammed.

Any thoughts from those of you who are experienced in this process would be greatly appreciated.

    Um...maybe ask nicely? ;)

    OK -- seriously...

I first became RA because my husband bought me a cert on eBay (I agree, it takes a strong constitution to do that...). I was lucky; our transaction went fine. Since then, I've "earned" RA -- I've given certs away to people I know. I traded my last one on Coupon Connection on Flyertalk for some miles that I needed on a carrier I don't normally use.

Does MilePoint have a trading forum yet?

There is an Exchange, but I believe you only get access to it when you reach Gold. Perhaps this is to keep outsiders out. It doesn't have much activity yet.

Thanks -- maybe I'll hit gold at some point and then can figure this thing out.

    Appreciate the info.

Never did figure out what the criteria are for making Gold - but it seems like making posts, replying to posts, having people like your posts, and having people quote your posts all count.

Here is the Exchange. See if works for you http://milepoint.com/forums/forums/the-exchange.320/

The Exchange might be for Gold Members only? On another note, if anyone has a RA cert. they don't plan on using anytime this year I'd be more than happy to take it from you before I lose my Platinum status :p

The Exchange is a Gold member perk... :)

The is quite the market for RA certificates. Aren't they worth $600+ on Ebay?

I would never risk losing that much money, although I would love RA of course :)

Usually $400-600. There are a dozen out there at any given time though.

    Viguera,

Where have you seen it for $400? I would pay that as one night free cert would cover that in Europe.

There's one on eBay for $400 right now with 24 hours left. Granted, that might shoot up at the end of the day but you never know. :)

Does it give you pause that a lot of those ebay auctions are for certs in Singapore and the like?

I guess Ebay offers you some protection. If you don't mind, do you feel if I make 5-10 stays at IC over the next 12 months, that the $400 will more than pay for itself, especially with the free weekend certificate?

Depends... if you get the 2-for-1 weekend cert that alone will pay for itself, depending on where you stay. And depending on which IC you stay in, the room upgrade and minibar alone will easily run you a few hundred dollars. :)

Yes, I agree 100%. It depends on the hotel...the upgrade...the minibar in question. ;)

When I became RA the first year, I wasn't intent on meeting the nebulous criteria to attain RA...and I was planning on just doing like you, a handful of stays to reap the benefits. At $400, if you divvy that up between 10 nights, that's $40/night for the upgrade...the lounge access (when given)...the minibar. Personally, I think that's a steal, but we all value things differently!

The weekend cert I'm about to receive as an Ambassador is the same one I'd receive as a Royal Ambassador? So would that mean I would have 2 two-one certs to use over the next year?

I agree that $400 is a good price to pay.

Yes, you would receive a second one if you qualify as a Royal Ambassador after you have already paid for Ambassador.

You can definitely buy them but also a fair chance to get scammed, so we cautious when buying them. I am always leery especially when I see people whose last 5 auctions were all for RA certs, and all in the last 2 months.

  25. I think the average selling price on Ebay over the past two or three years has been $600-$700, I've seen them go for more and some less, $700 was the magic number for quite a while. I've just been renewed and have a cert good till end of March 2012 so if anyone is interested in exchange private message me.
