I have a friend who wants to get to Alaska from St. Louis in the summer of 2016, and he asked me for credit card recommendations on how to obtain the miles to get a free ticket or two. He's not exactly sure where in Alaska he's headed yet, though.

From a quick search it seems that the most flights would probably be on Alaska Airlines, and to me it seems like the best way to fly on Alaska is actually with bonuses from an AA card, as it's only 25k roundtrip to Alaska.

United has flights to Anchorage, but they're much more limited.

So, I'm thinking of suggesting a 50k AA Citi card each for him and his wife.

    Anyone have any other ideas?

From STL, I would use Delta to MSP and ANC.

Do you have any idea how available are those routes on an award ticket? I hear lots of trash talked on DL award availability, but I don't deal in DL SkyMiles so I can't speak from firsthand experience.

Then again, I can't speak from firsthand experience on award availability for STL-SEA-ANC routes on AS either.

It might be best to have him apply for the AS credit card. If space is available on either AS/AA/DL, he can book those flights. If nothing is available, he can just use his companion certificate.

Yep, from STL, why *wouldn't* you look at AS?

Companion pass is a good option as I didn't think about that, but I figured using AA miles to fly AS would be better since he can get a 50k signup bonus with AA instead of a 25k bonus with an AS card.

What will they do if award space isn't available? :p By having the miles and companion cert. it guarantees them a flight to Alaska either for 'free' or at a 50% discount.

Acquiring AS miles for STL-ANC allows for the choice of three airlines (AS, AA and DL).

Both excellent points. I had suggested he get in on the AA card when I saw the 50k bonus was going away (I assume it has by now but haven't bothered to look yet). AS may be the way to go then.

    Thanks for the help!

Don't do Delta. You'll have a hard time finding seats at a reasonable amount of miles.

I thought it was DELTA - Don't Ever Layover Through Atlanta

    Atlanta kills me every time.
