I have a day to visit Warszawa (love this spelling). I'd like to pack a lot in, and love walking and using public transportation. Is there anything there that I absolutely should not miss? I'm thinking I should see Old Town, which is not old, I know. Any restaurants/deli's that stand out?

We enjoyed the walk from the train station (downtown) all the way to the Old Town, thru the University area. It's a lengthy walk, but there are plenty of places to stop and rest for coffee, etc. It's also on a bus route, so you can bail out at any time, and ride. The Old Town has many restaurants.

Thanks, glad to hear Old Town is as good as they say. Thanks for the info. Do you remember any restaurant names? I prefer finding local gems.

No, I don't remember, but we usually stopped at Pierrogeria's (sp?) and got combo plates of pierogi, washed down with some dark Okocim, of course. Almost all places had outdoor menus to look at before stepping in. Quite a few had outdoor seating areas too.

I can kill an entire afternoon in the park people watching and such there. Old Town is great. There are several great churches for those who like architecture. Whenever I'm in Warszawa, I just wander... and pop into somewhere for a drink and nosh when I need to rest my feet.

Thanks techgirl and piqaro. I'm looking forward to this Warsaw weekend.
People watching and religious architecture both are things I enjoy as well.

Servus, I just found your wonderful ft post on the Hilton Warsaw and the city tour you took. Now I'm thinking I should stay there. We were considering the Intercontinental cuz I think we have a free night to use -if not Hilton will be the as your description sounds great. I'll pm you for Gregory's info.
I'll probably pass on Cafe Wedler-I'm allergic to chocolate and the place looks tooooo tempting!

You will LOVE it then. I made my first trip to Warszawa during Lech Walesa's presidential run in 1989 (I did human rights mission work there) and fell in love with the city.

During my weekend stay last June, I walked a lot along the Royal Way and took multiple breaks for great food and beer and people watching. I also spent an afternoon in Łazienki Park. Overall, I would love to come back. P1060109_20pc.JPG P1060141_20pc.JPG

I was in Warsaw this past weekend. It is very cold this time of year so be sure to bring a hat, gloves, a warm coat, and a good friend. Nothing beats a plate of pierogi after hours of walking in the cold. If you like beer, try their HOT beer, especially when it's cold outside. There is an on-and-off bus that runs with limited hours in the winter that would give you a lay of the land and then you could pick the places you'd like to go back and see. You can't miss old town.

Gee, in Warsaw last weekend? I wonder if you met up with my friend there....I will be sure to take your advise and take a warm hat and gloves, and a good traveling friend will be top of my list![IMG]
Not so hot on beer so I"m hoping they have decent wine..if not I hear their vodka is ok.

The Vodka is definately good and their specialty. You will fine some decent wines as well. On the plane, if you're in coach however, you'll find Sutter Home.

Hi all, I'm back from warsaw. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!

We walked miles and miles, weather wasn't too bad as I was dressed for it. 34F ish and cloudy.
Markdragon, did you stay at the IC? Your photo of the Palace of Culture and Science is the view we had from the 37th floor. It was beautiful at night with the different color lights shining on it.
The walk from the hotel to old town was lengthy but very interesting. The parks were great, it would be nice to see them in spring/summer as I'll bet they're quite pretty. I was surprised to see venders selling TULIPS on the street corners this time of year. Wow, they were so beautiful and colorful, and cheap!!! Also found the "Pierrogeria" so quaint and the food smelled wonderful, I was sorry that I wasn't hungry as we had just had hot beer from a neighboring pub -the hot beer was good but filling! I was surprised when the bar person had to heat up the beer as I thought it would be a ready kind of thing.Very interesting spice mixture, reminding me of spiced wine or spiced cider. Very nice! I also tried the Zubrowka vodka. Great flavor, cute bottle and of course I had to buy a small bottle to bring home .

BTW, I guess I didn't share that I was flying LOT..wow, seemed like a step back in time (and the price paid for the ticket was back in time too lol)
