Miles are important to everyone for different reasons. The chief reason that comes to mind is free flights after hitting loyalty program thresholds. But, if you’re traveling a fair amount to get enough miles for a free flight the MileagePlus loyalty program offers some great upgrades once you hit even their lowest status level. The first status level you can achieve in MileagePlus is Premier Silver. So how do you get there and how long does it last? Attaining Premier Silver is done by hitting one of two thresholds, keep in mind these thresholds must be hit during a single calendar year. This means January 1st through December 31st, it’s not based on the year after your first flight as a MileagePlus member. (1) Fly 25,000 miles through United or any MileagePlus member. OR (2) Fly 30 flight segments. A flight segment is one leg of your journey, so on a roundtrip flight from Chicago to NYC you will receive credit for two segments. How long does Premier Silver last? As soon as you reach either of the thresholds your new status is activated. Then, you are able to keep the status for the remainder of the calendar year plus an entire year following. An Example: Attain Premier Silver on 10/15/2012… You are Premier Silver from 10/15/2012 through 12/31/2013. Pretty good deal right? Great ongoing perk? Extra legroom and priority boarding! Every flight you book once hitting this first status level gives you the opportunity (upon check-in) to reserve a seat with extended legroom. Then, you also get to board the plane before everyone else so no more hassling with finding overhead space. During mileage accumulation it’s important to keep in mind great benefits such as this which you receive benefit from every time you fly!
