I need to buy a decent laptop for an upcoming trip to NZ.

My main requirement is it has to be light and small enough that I can carry it with other clothes, etc. in my backpack when traveling. I will most likely only use it for surfing the web, some light office work, etc. It has to be able to handle video chat without overheating or freezing (had a bad experience with a company Macbook Air in Singapore that kept doing that)

Price range is flexible too but not too crazy. Been keeping track of Slickdeals.net and just missed out on the cool Samsung $350 offer, though I am not a big Samsung fan so its OK.

    Any suggestions?
    thanks,

We have the new SSD MacBook Air and it has been rock solid.

Way above price range but let me just say that I am not at all happy with the durability of the Samsung series 9. It's sleek looking, it's light, and it's perfectly powerful (though the hard drive is small and battery isn't particularly long-lasting). Biggest complaint is that the coating over a couple of keys has been chipping off, and the machine dents a bit as well. I've only had it for four months. At ~ $1400....

I like the solid feel and ergonomics of my Lenovo ThinkPad x100e, I'll be replacing it soon with an x120e that has an improved battery life.

I have a MacBook Pro 13.3 Inch -- not sure if you consider that "lightweight", that is my primary travel computer though.

However, I also have a HP EliteBook 2540p with 12.1 inch screen, 6 GB RAM and Windows 7.0 64bit -- for the size it is it lightweight, and VERY fast with it's I-7 dual core proc. But I believe it's at least 1200.00. -- for a PC, it's one of the best I've ever used and the graphics are quite nice on it as well.

I just played a bit with one at the apple store and loved it. Do you have the 11" or the 13"? Have you watched videos on it? HD videos? FaceTime/Skype?

And Skype worked nicely? I.e., you didn't experience anything like the OP:

In the times we used it we had no issues. Cannot comment on the other post. Sorry.

I bought an Alienware M11X for about $650

8GB / 700GB HD with a web cam and a decent video card so hopefully I have no issues with video chat, I won't be using it for gaming.
