Personally, I think Ivar's in Seattle, A Salt and Battery in Greenwich Village, New York, and oddly enough, a Korean owned mom and pop place called London Fish and Chips in Yuba City, CA, are indeed the best places for Fish (and sometimes chips) in the US.

  2. I think you need to go to London for good Fish and Chips.

Anywhere I think of ordering, I ask what type of fish it is.
Interestingly the most common answer is "I don't know", then I reply "are you sure it is fish ?"

Ivar's can be hit and miss in my experience. There are several good > great fish and chips places in Seattle; our faves are Chinooks at Fishermen's Terminal - http://www.anthonys.com/restaurants/info/chinooks.html (the halibut rocks) or, surprisingly, at Lowell's in the middle of the Pike Market. Both Lowell's and Chinooks have killer views to boot. (Oh, also the Bell Street Diner, another Anthony's place like Chinooks, is also great - located on the central waterfront next to the T66 cruise terminal.)

I lived for quite a few years in the UK, and while I like most chip shops' products, it's just too inconsistent to say one sticks out in my mind. In the interest of full disclosure, though, most of the fish suppers I consumed tended to sit on top of a fair amount of previously stored beer.

In my hometown, it's Zeke's Fish & Chips (Fort Worth, TX).

I am always on a quest for great fish & chips.

In the metro Detroit area, an Italian place called Fillipa's (I think its in Shelby Township or Utica) has GREAT fish and chips, served several different ways including in paper.

In the Washington, DC area, the best I've found is Eammon's (run by Cathal Armstrong who is from Dublin). It's on King Street in Old Town Alexandria.

    Good Day:
When in Seattle my favorite Fish and Chips place is Sunfish in Alki. It is owned and operated by two gentlemen originally from the island of Crete. They have Halibut and True Cod with the lightest coating I have ever experienced.
They do not take credit cards and have been known to take month long vacations, so call ahead . You won't be disappointed.

Well here on the Sunshine Coast in queensland we always go to the Bridge seafoods Mooloolaba-right on the river and fish fresh from their trawler.

I second the vote for Eammon's. If memory serves me correctly, they also have a deep fried Mars bar to finish off your meal.

    Long John Silver's!

I wasn't a fan of Ivar's. Fish and chip's is served with malt vinegar.

It's not in the US, but the best fish & chips I've ever had was a place called The Colourpatch Cafe, in Augusta, West Australia. They bill themselves as the "Last Eating House before the Antartic"
