Renting a car from National (I'm emerald exec with them) for 4 days later this week at LAX. Quick question; what's the best cc to use for the rental?

    I have:
    CSP
    Ink Bold
    Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve
    Chase UA Explorer
    Barclays US Airways

If you are willing to get a new card, Chase Sapphire Preferred. It is a Visa Signature and you get the best of the best on rental coverage (that's available for free at least). Also, you get 2x for travel and dining. Car rentals are included in the travel category.

    OP already has CSP ;)

And the UA Card has better rental coverage in that its primary vs the CSP secondary

I need to learn all of these acronyms, lol. Learn something new everyday and I didn't even know that there are cards out there that offered primary coverage. Crazy!! Thanks edekba!

Primary coverage is important only if the OP has comprehensive+collision coverage on his personal car. Probably true for most people on MP.

However, I have liability coverage only on my personal car. So, it doesn't really matter whether the collision coverage offered by CC is primary or secondary. In this case, I always use CSP for car rental. VIsa signature+2X points.

    Am I missing anything?

Just throwing it out in case the OP has liability only coverage, he/she would be missing out on the 2X UR points.

the claims process is much easier/simpler with primary coverage.

It's up to you to decide if that's worth it or not, I suppose. It is for me.

Isn't the primary coverage a factor of the issuing bank? The assumption is that the UA MP card is a World Mastercard and that the CSP is a Visa Signature.

What if the CSP is a World Mastercard? Would it, too, have primary coverage?

I believe primary coverage is card, not bank or logo (Visa, MC, AE) specific. There are some World MC's that have primary coverage, but I don't believe all do. It wasn't mentioned in this post either, which I'd assume Gary would know about.

I followed the link to Gary's blog to Dan's Deals. There are some insurance benefits to the SP World MC that are unique from the Visa version, but it doesn't look like primary coverage is one of them, as neither mention it.
