Mooburgers at Coogee and Bondi Beach combine history and hearty fare in retro outfits perfect for a burger and chips. Adam Gerondis’s grandfather opened Australia’s first milk bar in 1932. Little Cow is for the kids and Big Moo comes with the lot. Beware the Deluxe Moo (double 100% wagyu meat and a lot of the lot) unless you’re ready to battle a very serious burger. Wash it down with a Mooteaser – a milkshake made better by malteasers.

Justin North knows how to flip a burger and with burger buns baked fresh on the premises and locally sourced artisan ingredients, the top hat chef promises an ‘ultimate burger experience’. Think traditional Waygu burger with beetroot and relish or for a burger with a twist, try The Rustic Chorizo Classic. The beef pattie is infused with smoked paprika, chorizo and fennel, served with soft peppers and a fried egg. The Producers Burger is a Sydney classic and comes with marinated local mushrooms, haloumi, sun-dried tomatoes, baby spinach and aioli on a sesame bun.

At possibly the only Sydney fine dining where it’s appropriate to eat with your hands, put your elbows on the table and dig in to the infamous wagyu burger at Rockpool Bar and Grill. Served in the bar, this burger comes with bacon, gruyere cheese and zuni pickle on a proper burger bun. The house rules say ‘no hooting no hollering’ but we can’t help celebrating – anything from Neil Perry this good for just $22 is a steal.

As you watch the waves roll in and the surfers park up and race into them, order a supersized cheese burger retro style with fries of course and sit under large white umbrellas with a cold beer. It’s all just so cucumber cool and how beach life rolls in the Northern beaches. Just add a milkshake for an extra chilled lunch.
