Beer company Molson Canadian launched a campaign created by agency Rethink aimed at restoring Canadian pride. They placed a stocked beer fridge in areas across Europe, including Canterbury, the white cliffs of Dover, London, Northern France, Cassel, Brussels, and rural Belgium.

The red fridge had the text “Canadians scan your passport to open fridge” on the front, above a slot for inserting a passport to be scanned. The door would only unlock and allow people to sample the Molson beer inside if someone scanned their Canadian passport.

Now if they would only put some actual beer in it. Molson Canadian can be described as a lightly coloured fizzy drink similar to water but with less flavour.

If it were Alexander Keith's...I would absolutely scan a Canadian Passport. But considering it's Molson...

Great PR move and fun campaign. Would be interesting to see how the end up measuring ROI on this project.

What's next, Wisconsin will want to see your driver license to grab a slice of cheddar out of the cheese fridge?

Keith's or UCLager for me, tx!
    Nice advertising though!!!

I will say that Molson's does have some of the more memorable ads, with Joe Canadian ("The Rant") and "The Anthem" as classics!

If it's THAT bad then why aren't the SkyClubs serving it?

Every time I go up north, I always bring back at least one case of Keith's. I always get a look when I declare it, but no problems so far.

Brilliant campaign, I think. What an easy way to get all your info for marketing!

Did they lock it up because they were afraid the Belgians with their clearly superior beer would use it to rinse their dishes before washing them in real water?

  14. If anyone is in London on Monday July 1st, you can help celebrate Canada day with our beer!! Traflagar Square becomes a part of Canada on July 1 every year.

the red fridge may even be there.

  16. The beer in trafalgar sq. is not free either.
They even sell Poutine there on July 1 and have hockey demos plus Canadian entertainment

Hmm...here's an interesting business idea: free beer if you scan driver's license, then enter SSN and mother's maiden name.
