I have found that it is worthwhile to check my AMEX account frequently under the "Offers for you" tab. AMEX is always offering discounts for purchases from certain retailers. I personally have saved $100 this year already - all on purchases I regularly make anyway.
Some of the offers I have taken advantage of recently include:
$15 off $75 purchase at Walmart.com (gift cards included)
$25 off $75 purchase at Staples (gift cards included)
    $10 off $50 purchase at Lowe's
$10 off $75 purchase at Whole Foods
And right now AMEX is offering $5 off a $25 purchase of gas at the pump at BP stations (and this one is repeatable up until Dec. 31)
So, check the offers in your AMEX account. Registering your card for an offer just takes a few seconds, and the rebate usually posts in 2-3 business days after you make your qualifying purchase.

In addition to the repeatable BP, I also had a one-time Exxon Mobil and one-time Murphy (Wal-Mart). And the recurring 10% off at Best Buy Amazon.

yes, lots of savings on gas this month. I've already gotten my $5 off on Exxon and will use the Murphy $5 off this weekend when I am traveling (there are none in local area)

I figured out last night that the offers are one time per CARDHOLDER, not per CARD. I added an offer to my SPG business account and I could not add the same offer to my PRG Card. and Vice Versa.

Note that my Murphy offer was $5 back on a $5 purchase, although I needed a fill-up anyway.

Yes, I received the same offer. Most of these AMEX offers seem to be for virtually everyone. However a few of the offers are very short term. The Staples $25 off $75 lasted only a few days, which is why I recommend that folks check their accounts often.

For those who drive diesel vehicles, I can report the following. The Murphy's diesel fuel was of terrible quality. I had to add a fuel booster to restore performance.
The Exxon-Mobil diesel fuel was the best quality I've encountered so far.
Just FYI, diesel fuel composition and cetane numbers are not yet standardized in the USA -- thus the need to share such quality reports.
Also, the 20% discount on BP fuels (uncapped) is an incredible deal.

While planning out my coming road trip, I discovered that gasbuddy.com's search feature allows you to search for only BP stations in a particular area or an entire state. This very useful from now until Dec. 31. :)

Sadly there seem to be no BP stations left on the west coast, or at least in the areas I have searched. Did they convert them all to Arco? No credit cards accepted at Arco, so no point even trying.

That's the reason I used the one-time Murphy's discount already - a few Exxons around here, I get a discount with Chevron, Texaco, and Costco but will use the BP discount every weekend I fly to the Tennessee house. Like Friday ;)

And further, if you hold more than one AMEX card, check them all, because some offers appear on only certain cards, while other offers may appear on all your cards.

I always wondered about this. I wonder if it is targeted per card type, or per account, or random?

For my Platinum Card, here is what I currently have:

    pic 2: http://imageshack.com/a/img842/9748/nxh4.png

All Platinum holders the same? or is it just "based of current account"?

Dunno about you platinum guys, but to me, it seems targeted based on the holder's card type(s) and usage pattern/history. I was getting lots of offers on my HH/Surpass, and only a few on my Costco card. When I added the SPG card, I got nothing on it until after at least one complete billing cycle/meeting minimum spend for the signup bonus; after that, the SPG list of offers is just as long as the Surpass list, but some items still appear on only one card.

Your Platinum list looks about the same as my SPG, but there are some different items. Perhaps they target based on prior purchase history.

I get virtually the same offers on my two cards. And my list is mostly similar to what was posted above.

My best offers are on my Delta AMEX, and almost duplicated on my Hilton. No offers on the SPG, and minimal offers on the PRG. I didn't get the Wal-mart offer that others have received.

The Wal-Mart offer was one that did not last long. That's why I recommend that folks check their account frequently. The best deals go the most quickly.
