Just called customer service, trying to call the 801 468 4000 phone number.

By force of habit with customer serice numbers, I dialed 800 468 4000 instead, on speakerphone in my office.

Imagine my surprise when I immediately heard "Welcome to 1 800 free sex".

Just be really, really cautious when calling Marriott hotels in the UK. Worse than a sex line, several of the Marriott properties have public numbers that are not-geographic area code specific. Last year I had to pay over GBP 100 for a call from my home to one of those hotels. That made me rather upset, the charge was GBP 9.99 per minute. I protested but Marriott was entirely dismissive of my objection. I later learned that they receive about 90% of the charges. That, and another matter, made me quit Marriott entirely. Although i was Platinum with average of 120 nights/years they never even responded to my letters.

I have heard of such things but this is the first one reported first hand that I have heard about. The speakerphone does rather take the cake, doesn't it?

In the US if you're off one digit on the Platinum line, you get a sex line as well. The one time I did dial it wrong I did have the speakerphone on, and I dove across the office to disconnect :)

    Cheers.

Maybe that was the Cathay Pacific Customer Service Line (well, for pilots only!) :p
