Skift's article on how BBC botched the acquisition of LP quotes BBC Trust as saying that the acquisition was a mistake similar to those done by others, so it is OK :) LP was sold at a loss, to a tobacco baron in the US by BBC.

LP may have been very popular in the past, and still has a cult following amongst the backpacker crowd, it has over the years become stale. In fact LP too missed the digital revolution, and treated thorntree as a step-child.

Wonder what the new owners, NC2 Media cooks up. Definitely much different from Google's acquisition of Frommer's.

Lonely Planet was never my go-to Guide :)

Lonely Planet was my online go-to place for travel information, and it's sad to see how the BBC wrecked it over the years. Their user-unfriendly decisions have driven a large percentage of the user base away, and I don't see them coming back regardless of what the new owners decide to do.
