BANGKOK (AP) Authorities at Bangkok's international airport say it is home to more than 80 species of birds that pose safety risks to aircraft using the facility.

Suvarabhumi Airport was built on 12.5 square miles (32 square kilometers) of swampy land east of Bangkok and is surrounded by vast areas of farmland and rice paddy fields.

Airport director Somchai Sawasdeepon said Tuesday that several birds have collided with planes since the airport opened in 2006.

He said there were "no serious" incidents but bird strikes pose "major threats" to safety at the airport, one of Asia's busiest.
