Had to strip out most of the pictures, full post can be found here: ULTIMATE HONEYMOON: WHICH STARWOOD PROPERTY IN BALI?

I realize this topic has come up in one variation or another, but it's generally this property vs. this property. I'm hoping to narrow down the best choice for getting the best value out of Starpoints when staying in Bali and have done a ton of exhausting researching-- but am hoping people's experiences can help shed some light.

The situation: I have appx 130k Starpoints saved, going on a honeymoon in December and am trying to figure out how to most effectively book the hotels. Need to book 3-5 nights in Bali, 1-2 nights in Ubud, 1-2 nights in Jakarta and have already booked 3 nights in the Maldives (non-SPG property).

    ---------------------------------

Bali is one of the top honeymoon destinations in the world with literally hundreds of hotels in dozens of regions to choose from--so which one do you choose? I've narrowed my choice by *trying* to stay at Starwood or Hyatt properties using points or cash & points. And, if it doesn't make sense to use points, then I'd still prefer to stay at one of these properties so that I might have a better chance for an upgrade and, at the very least, earn more points while staying. At the end of the day, however, it might be cheaper and a better experience to stay at a local property.

Other choices to maximize Starwood Preferred Guest Points:

    1. Use Suite Night Awards (SPG Platinum amenity)
Pro: Might be able to get a suite for free, can use on any type of stay (award or cash), SPG Platinum members get 10 free SNAs a year
Con: Can only confirm within 5 days of arrival

    2. Use the new Cash & Points options
Pro: Would guarantee me into a suite, I think?
Con: Wouldn't be able to use the 5th night free or the 35% off coupon.

    3. Use points to upgrade to a suite
    Pro: Hmmm....
Con: Can only confirm within 5 days of arrival, basically the same as Suite Night Award, pretty expensive

    4. 50% Off Regular Rack Rates coupon
Pro: Very cheap to use--only 1k Starpoints!
Con: 50% off of rack rate might be a worse price than the best rate offered

    ------------------------------------------------

    Hyatt Bali properties:

    Grand Hyatt Bali
    Trip Advisor:: 80% / Ranked #21 of 36 hotels in Nusa Dua / 4.0 of 5 stars / 1136 Reviews
Cheapest Cash Room:: $223/night REFUNDABLE for basic "Grand King" (527 sq ft)
Good value Cash Room: $641/night REFUNDABLE for "Grand Suite King" (1,517 sq ft)
Points for basic:: 60k for 5 nights for basic "Grand King" (527 sq ft)
    Points/$ return basic: $1,115 / 60k = 1.86 cents/points
Points for suite: 90k for 5 nights in "Grand Suite King" (1,517 sq ft)
    Points/$ return suite: $3,205 / 90k = 3.56 cents/points

Other choices to maximize Hyatt points:

    1. Use "Suite Upgrade Award" (4 free as a Hyatt Diamond Amenity)
Pros: 1 "Suite Upgrade Award" will cover up to 7 nights, confirmed into a suite
Cons: Must be a on a paid stay, "For purposes of this award, a suite provides for one-bedroom accommodations. Suite upgrade award is not valid toward Specialty, Premier, Presidential or Diplomatic Suites."

    2. Use points to book a Suite:
Pros: Can be confirmed into a suite
Cons: Costs 50% more points, probably only works for Standard Suites

    3. Book with cash, upgrade with points
Pros: Can guarantee/confirm into a suite?
Cons: Have to book a minimum of the deluxe room (more expensive), 6k points is only good for 4 nights
With this option I would book 4 nights into the "Club Deluxe King" at $332/night and then use 6k points to upgrade to a suite.

Points needed to upgrade to suite from cash rate with the following stipulation: "When redeeming Regency Club® or Grand Club® upgrades or suite upgrades at a resort property, you must pay a minimum of the Hyatt Daily Rate deluxe room (such as partial ocean view, ocean view, slope view, etc)."

    So...what to do?

I have see reviews of the W stating you could be at a W anywhere in the world. It is not very Balinese. Don't know if that is important to you. Read really good reviews of the St. Regis.

If you are set on using Chain hotels then either Starwood or Hyatt will do. However, I have found that in Bali, in particular, the small non-chain boutique hotels are much cheaper, give fabulous rooms and are more personalized than a large hotel.

Bali is very special in this regard. Jamahal Private Resort & Spa is one example.

The St. Regis is a fantastic property. I have not stayed there, but I did tour it and will probably stay there when we go back to Bali. We stayed at the W in Semanyak and really liked the hotel. The service was excellent. We were given a very nice upgraded room, although not a suite as they were all taken at the time. The food was excellent and the view was very nice from the pool. In Nusa-Dua we stayed at the Conrad and it was a great hotel. We were upgraded to a suite that was extremely spacious. The pool there is huge.

(bolding mine), it should be important when visiting Bali, amazing culture & people. The SPG properties are fine, however I really urge anyone going to try to lodge elsewhere on the island in addition to SPG (if important to stay at SPG).
    agreed.

we had breakfast brought to our room each morning, we overlooked a rice paddy inland, no other guests around. There was a spa at the entrance to the resort, Mrs Willie & I would walk the 100 yards or so & get a massage every evening. Heavenly.
A "major" resort will be quite nice & you will have a terrific time, but as stated, a local property outside the southern end of Bali I think you'll find well worthwhile.

This analysis is completely focused on the cost per point, or total expenditure on the hotel, and almost universally ignores the qualitative factors make each hotel desirable to stay at.

I get that you are trying to save money, but this is your honeymoon, and the extra $1,000 or $2,000 you would spend staying outside of a chain resort would make a world of difference.

I'm in a similar boat (not going there for my honeymoon, but taking a 1 year anniversary trip with my wife next year), and i'm going through a similar evaluation process. Ultimately, we want to pick the best property, which involves quite a few factors (only one of which are cost/points).

Keep that in mind when you make your decision.

The villas at the sheraton laguna were amazing. Worth a night or two on a honeymoon even if paid.

Completely agree--above is my attempt at comparing the quantitative values of the hotels since I've never experienced any of them i.e. cost per night, return on Starpoints redemption, Trip Advisor score etc... this thread is my attempt at gathering the qualitative properties of the hotels from fellow traveler's experiences/suggestions. At the end of the day we'll stay at any property that makes the most sense--Starwood/Hyatt or not--but just want to explore our options where I have points/status first.

Absolutely loved the St. Regis. I burned points and was able to get a confirmed upgrade to a Strand Villa for 300 dollars a night. Totally worth it. Just contact the hotel and they will be able to accommodate you
