Since there are quite a few pretty good promotions that pop up for BA is it feasible to consider signing up for some of the BA card deals under the premise that I would want to convert/transfer them to either AA or Skymiles points?

It doesn't convert to the other programs well.

You can, however, use BA miles on OneWorld airlines such as AA.

Could I combine points from BA and AA for an itinerary?

You cannot add BA miles and AA miles together. They are non-transferrable. However, you could use your AA miles to book one segment in your itinerary and then you could use your BA miles to book another segment of your itinerary. In that way, you can combine your miles to produce one travel itinerary.

This is especially useful if you want to take advantage of stopover rules or mileage requirements which vary a bit from AA and BA.
