I don't know if it's because I don't have great status on BA but I booked 2 business class award tickets using Avios and find that I need to pay extra to have pre-assigned seats (since I have 4 legs this turns out to be a lot of money). It's not something that United or Lufthansa does.

Do they charge their silver or gold members for this privilege too? Or is this just a general BA policy?

It's not because they are award seats. It's the same for paid tickets without status - unless you get First Class.

Many thanks to you both for your replies. Now I know!!

So it's status and status, except for First Class :)

Though I guess I'd be an unhappy camper if I purchased a full fare business class seat and was dinged by BA to pay for the seat assignment. For a mileage ticket I'm not so troubled.

If you buy a "full-fare" business class ticket (ie in J or C class), you don't have to pay extra for seat pre-allocation. Ditto for W class or Y class tickets, the full-fare booking classes in the WT+ and WT cabins.

Hmmm - might be better to buy discounted Business and pay for the seat!!! Sure you're right tho.

Of course it might! Who would pay a shed load of extra money for a ticket just to get seat pre-allocation? It isn't that important. After all, there really are no bad seats in Club World, even if there are some that are better than others.

If you have plat or higher on Aa you can associate status with res and get free advanced seating

    BA website says:
What happens if I pay for seat assignment, and then they change it on me? Do I get a refund, or get screwed?
