We booked two FC saver tickets to Spain for next spring. The routing is less than ideal as we go to LGA and then out from EWR to LHR. From there it is on to BCN. The TALT portion is on BA and has high fees.
There are non-stop flights from several US gateways to BCN. We were told if seats open we can change at no charge even if this means flying over on a different day. We would like to go a day later and return a day later. Also if we can get AA or US metal we could save about $600 in fees per ticket.
So we are trying to change first to a non-stop, second to a US or AA metal flight and third to move the date either going or returning or both.
QUESTION: Can all or any of this be done without paying change fees? What if to get preferred flights and dates we downgrade to Business?

You can change dates without a fee if everything else (route, metal) stays the same. The fees to change the route are waived only for the EXP members, or if the airline makes the original route impossible.

You can definitely change the dates, times, and connecting cities (including switching to a nonstop) without paying a fee if the origin and destination remain the same.

You should be able to switch from your BA flight to a US/AA flight without a fee. I've done exactly that and am PLT not EXP. MX, are you saying you were charged a fee for switching from BA to AA?

Just to be clear, you can get a voluntary downgrade for free. You'd only pay that fee if you want the difference in miles returned.

Worse, they threatened a fee for asking to change from US to AA post the merger deal.

Did you hang up and call again? Switching from US to AA does not require a fee. I have done that as well. There's must be something more to your original ticket and reissued ticket. I can't say without details.

Regardless, what you posted is not what AA publishes as the rules.

'Tis cool that there will probably not be a fee! But is there availability now? ;)
