I have a question related to the new policy that gives SPG members stay credit when they use award stays... not sure if this has been addressed already elsewhere, if so I apologize.

Can I get stay credit if I stay on an award reservation but that is paid for by another SPG member...? This is, I will not be using my own starpoints for the award stay. An example of this situation would be, I have a business associate use his Starpoints to get me an award night... I check in for that stay but then put my SPG number on file... would I be allowed to earn that stay credit...?

Also, for incidentals... this is more a plain vanilla question, but for any other charges I put on the room folio, I would be eligible for Starpoints, or...?

    Thanks very much,
    Alex / Gaucho

If it is a gift to you, yes. Here is the applicable FAQ:

Q: If I want to gift an SPG Award stay or night to someone else, who gets the elite status credit?

A: If you (giver) decide to gift an SPG Award stay or night to someone else (receiver), the receiver will be given the stay/night credit toward elite status qualification. If the receiver is not an SPG member, he or she can enroll and receive the stay/night credit. You, the giver, will not receive any elite credit for that posted stay.

One assumes that if that the hotel has your account number on file, then they can see to this as well.

William- this is helpful. A slight twist on the question: you can only get stay credit for one stay at once though, right? I'm paying for my kids room, but my wife is paying for my room with C+P. I don't think I can be credited with concurrent stays can I?

I'm not William, but if you were to simply book one room for you and another room for your kids, both at rack rate, on your SPG account number, and paid with your credit card, you would only expect one stay credit, right? So C+P would not be expected to improve this, would it?

Or were you hoping that using your absent wife's points for C+P would somehow give her credit for a stay (based on your room) without coming to the hotel while you collect the stay credit for the kids' room? Isn't it true that you must occupy the room to get a stay credit and you can only get a stay credit for one room?

I think the question is more a matter of whether this scheme will get even a single stay credit for you.

Thanks- actually I don't have a deep knowledge of what does and doesn't get a stay credit with SPG. Havent been on MP for months so not up to speed. Thanks for the quick info.

You will find this a YMMV type thing. Some properties will give you credit for two concurrent stays, others will not.

Why do i get the feeling that the policy as stated above is going to lend itself to people start posting ways to game the system. :)

You are kind of at the mercy of how the hotel chooses to handle this one. What they should do is combine both rooms into one posting so you get one stay credit for both rooms as a single stay, but I've seen it go either way.

I actually got credit for an award booked using someone else'd points. Had to make it clear that he wasn't the guest, I was, but they figured it out.

W/R/T the twist, if your wife isn't going to be there, then the kids should get an SPG account just to get the points for their room... They might not get status but the points will come in handy someday.
