An article in the Sydney Morning Herald:

Australian airports have ranked poorly in a confidential report ranking consumer satisfaction.

Private research from Airports Council International, obtained by Bloomberg, reveals Sydney Airport rated the best among Australia's airports, but even it was down at number 67.

Melbourne Airport performed far worse, rated outside the top 100 at 104 - five spots behind London's Heathrow, the airport rated by some surveys as the world's worst.

Townsville at 71, Adelaide at 72 and the Gold Coast at 75 all did better than Melbourne, but Perth was further back at 120.

Auckland did better than any Australian airport, ranked at number 63.

Singapore, Incheon-Seoul in South Korea and Hong Kong occupy the three highest spots, with the top 10 also including hubs in Beijing, Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur, according to ACI Airport Service Quality standings based on passenger surveys in the second quarter of 2010.

I have never been, It is about $1,000 for a return trip for me. For that sort of money I would rather go overseas, some countries are closer as well.

I've been through most of those airports listed above and have to agree. Melbourne, in particular, is far below what one would expect when arriving in a modern city of that size. The fact that it is behind Townsville and the Gold Coast (both of which are very small airports by comparison) is woeful.

I'm surprised Beijing is ranked so high. The facility was nice and new, but I thought it was laid out a little oddly and wasn't very user friendly. That's just me though, apparently others love it!

I don't think it's that bad at all.

To me, the biggest disadvantages are all transport related:

    1) Usurious parking charges levied by the monopolist owners ($20 for 61 minutes!!!!!)
    2) Inadequate shuttle bus services to the long term carpark
    3) No connection to the rail or tram network
    4) Toll road connection to the city (>$5)

    The advantages are:
    1) Small so no long walks to the gate (AKL is guilty of this - it must be a 1km walk to gate 15 from the lounge!)
    2) Customs is fairly quick to clear
    3) Security queues never >5min (IME)
    4) Has a QF F lounge :)
    5) No shuttle bus/train between domestic + international terminals.
    6) Hilton (soon to be ex-Hilton) on site

Oh you definitely should visit Perth! The gorgeous city more than makes up for the outdated airport! The beaches, the food, the people are all priceless! :)
