Looks like the low number of injuries and death are miraculous. This could have been much, much worse.

first 777 passenger fatalities in 18 years of service. overall an incredible safety record.
(one ground crew fatality in 2001 in a refueling incident).

I'm glad so many people will walk away from this accident.

An important thing or two that this unfortunate event this highlights... for takeoff and landing, always have your shoes on and have you passport and wallet in a pocket on the clothes that you have on. You wouldn't want to be walking outside this plane without shoes...nor without some credentials and form of payment!

SK still announces to keep your shoes on...more carriers should.

Yep. Even the BA crash had no fatalities.

That is a truly amazing statistic on the 777 but also on commercial airline safety that most of us who are frequently in the air should take comfort in after an incident like with this OZ flight, which could indeed have been much worse.

Checked UA dot bomb, and wondered how they were accounting for the delays, without using really scary (to the average pax) words. Found this:
    AirportAverage DelayReason
SAN FRANCISCO 233 Minutes DISABLED AIRCRAFT

At least it would appear they admit it's MX and not WX, which would really get them off the hook.

Technically it is an ATC delay as ATC closed the field and now only is allowing 2 runways to be used.

I cannot quote this enough. Shoes on until the double chimes, and shoes back on after the double chimes. Not something you want to be fumbling around with if you need to exit in a hurry.

I wonder what was wrong with the slide to door 1r. Most of the photos I see show the door with a metal ladder going to it. Several articles say things along the lines of "people didn't wait for the slide" and jumped". Armed slides are supposed to inflate the moment the door is opened. Something was wrong with the door/slide.

Has any plane gone more seat miles without an onboard fatality? Concorde ran longer until its first, but clearly would have lost when looking per seat mile.

There are some rudimentary stats in the NYT piece on the OZ flight crash:
"The crash comes after a remarkable period of safety for airlines in the United States. It had been more than four years since the last fatal crash involving a commercial airliner — a record unmatched for half a century. Globally, too, last year was the safest since 1945, with 23 deadly accidents and 475 fatalities, according to the Aviation Safety Network, an accident researcher
    .....
Mr. Wallace said that even though an Air France A340 suffered a worse fire after overrunning a runway in Toronto in 2005, all 309 people on board survived. Only 12 were seriously injured.
    "
Commercial airline crashes are really rare, which is very comforting considering how many planes and people are in the air at the same time each second of every minute of every hour!

+1. Shoes on and headphones off. I can't say I always follow this rule, but it's certainly the most prudent course of action, and it doesn't have significant downsides. I do worry that I sometimes travel in flip flops - that would be a *itch if you have to run through burning debris.

And seat backs (and tray tables) up.

A reclined seat (non hardshell) reduces the space in the row behind, inhibiting the ability if those passengers to quickly exit.

If someone reclines their seat (has happened a few times) during take off roll I will start pushing their seats up and give them a dirty look. I'm not risking it over someone wanting to be too comfortable during critical phases of flight.
