I received a letter from Barclays intended to "re-disclose certain account terms". Specifically, it warns that the only way to avoid the $89 annual fee is to cancel the account before the fee posts. So make sure you know the deadline, if you don't want to keep this card for another year.

Thanks for posting, MX. This is interesting, since other banks (e.g., Chase) will provide a reasonable grace period for credit card cancellation, and not charge their annual fee, should you miscalculate the renewal date.

Correct, this introduces a negative grace period for the annual fee, which is contrary to all other US lenders AFAIK.

Does this apply to all Barclay's cards?

I guess it is generally easier to just cancel or call retention before the annual fee posts anyway. Of course, with some cards an extra couple months of benefits can be quite valuable.

I knew my friends got retention offers from Barclaycard while Arrival Plus is quite new to market.

The letter was specifically about Arrival Plus. I don't know about the others.
Perhaps you and others could share the current retention offers from Barclays.
Also, is there a phone number connecting directly to the Retention Dept?

I just got hit by this, but they did disclose it and I've made enough use of Arrival Plus to justify the annual fee, this year at least.

hmm interesting. I hope this doesn't become a trend where the other credit card offerors follow.

Could you please clarify to what card and issuer you were referring?

What is anyone's experience getting Barclays to waive the annual fee? Does it depend on how much you've spent on the card? It's probably not worth the $89/yr for me.

Well worth the fee to me, but it is easy to send yourself an email at a future date..,

So a reminder to cancel should not be a problem, this game does take a little planning,

Barclays waived my renewal fee on the US Airways card, and offered to downgrade Arrival Plus to the no-fee Arrival (but no outright fee waiver).

I just called a few weeks ago to downgrade to the no-fee Arrival. New card showed up less than ten days later.

I experienced the same thing with the Arrival Plus. I was not offered a fee waiver, so I downgraded to the no-fee Arrival MC.
