Apparently there is someone out there convinced that they have the next brilliant idea: Take an out of the way airport, gas-guzzling planes and a questionable employee role definition policy and make a new airline out of the deal. What is even more ironic is that the COO is a guy who was around in the original PEOPLExpress days, so he knows that the end result is a company that couldn't make a go of it. Of course the old version was the originator of unbundling and fees, while the new one promises to avoid them in most cases.

There's also the part where they only expect to fly 12 departures from Newport News - their hub - daily at launch, scaling up to 25 in a few years. And they're buying 737-400s, the least fuel-efficient of the 737 product line. They're jamming 158 seats inside, leaving passengers with a soul- and knee-crushing 28.5" pitch on average and requiring a 4th FA to meet FAA staffing minimums.

It is almost hard to believe that they are serious. But apparently they really are.

To answer the questioning the thread title: I never flew them before and I certainly do not plan to do so now, if their reincarnation gets off the ground, pun intended.

This sounds suspiciously like the company that ran the SF Bay van shuttle airport service that later became SuperShuttle.

I flew them a few times...

They lost my bag in 1983 on their BUF-EWR service ... I'm still waiting for it to be delivered to my house... ;)

wasnt this airport 1 of the ones that FL flew into but WN is CXing?

I can understand why someone may try to start up a carrier based out of there

Yes, it is one of the airports FL/WN is dropping, but I'm not so convinced that's enough to build an airline hubbed there from.

My knee needs hammering. Alas, I can't find a decently priced positioning flight to Newport News. ;)

I suppose this isn't that far from Allegiant's business model? They fly MD-80s between secondary airports. Though, they seem to be able to make it work by targeting leisure travelers with travel packages and O&D routes, as opposed to a hub-spoke model.

Believe it or not, the MD80s are actually a touch more fuel efficient than the 734s; the MD87s are even more efficient than the 80s. On a per-passenger basis I suppose it is about a wash given that the MDs hold fewer passengers, but it is still not great and Allegiant is not as successful now as they have been in the past with the fuel costs going up so much. Plus, they have targeted larger leisure destinations as their focii of operations. PHF hardly fits that bill.

Shoot, you'd think they could pick up some B717s for a pittance rather than playing paleontologist and digging up 734 dinosaurs. Boeing/MD built 150 or so and there's only around 130 in service. I'm sure whoever has the remaining 20 would like to offload them in some manner...

WN seems keen to unload a few 717s, but it doesn't seem too likely that they'd want to do so to a carrier setting up show in a market that they're abandoning.

Well, the problem with the original was they took over a failing airline, and that airline brought them down too (Had to do a case study on them in college)

They could still hire in-house crews rather than wet-lease everything. It will definitely make a difference as they claim to be trying for a Part 121 license to operate.
