What is the appropriate procedure when you see and verify that your flight shows R9/RN9 well within your ugprade window but you haven't been ugpraded?

Depends on whether your upgrade is coming from Complimentary Premier Upgrades (CPU) or a confirmable instrument (like a Regional Upgrade, a Global Upgrade, or miles and money).

If your upgrade is coming from a RPU/GPU/miles+copay: call in and ask politely about the status of your upgrade. "Do I remember right that these upgrades come from the R booking class? Hmm, I see that it's R9. Could you help out?" They should fix it; if they don't, hang up and try again.

If your upgrade is coming from a CPU: wait and hope for the best. There's a known bug where the CPU process shuts down entirely if someone ahead of you in line has an out-of-sync ticket and can't be upgraded; this leaves the flight wide open for RPU/GPU/miles+copay and possibly cash buy-ups, and it leaves you in a position to wait until things get sorted out, possibly until as late as departure time. It's also possible that this behavior could be by design: since CPU runs as an occasional "sweep", roughly once a night, rather than being "dynamically waitlisted", it is possible that UA is setting R0 just before the sweep and R9 just after and everything is running as expected.

If your upgrade is coming from a CPU and you don't mind being rude: call in and ask what's up. Sound poorly informed. "Hi, just calling to check on the status of my complimentary elite upgrade … do those still come out of R inventory?" We've heard reports that internal policy requires that agents do not manually CPU you no matter what. But we have also heard reports of agents approving a "one time exception", which seems totally appropriate if there are 9 upgrade seats and fewer than 9 elites whose upgrade windows are open.

Even if you can't get an agent to break the rules, jump the queue, and forcibly CPU you, you can always apply a regional upgrade or a mileage upgrade if you've got a spare (well, until your huge bounty of RPUs runs out). Safe travels!

    Sorry, meant using CPU.

Upgrades for award tickets seem to work a lot smoother than CPU.

    Thanks for your reply.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this... Don't the domestic award ticket upgrades also process via CPU?

I would hope United implements a policy and IT infrastructure where CPUs automatically clear into R space once the upgrade window becomes available.

Today the flight was R1/RN1, still no upgrade, no waitlist either.

Are you getting the offer to buy the upgrade?

My flight on Sunday, a different flight, is RN3/R3, no upgrade.

I did get upgraded on a different pair of flights for tomorrow night (award flights).

For the original flight I posted about, I used an Regional upgrade when it went to RN1/R1, and there only 2 unassigned seats in F. I still have no idea why my upgraded never cleared on that one. The flight was booked in V, which is not really a cheap fare on this route.

So you tried using a regional on the R1/RN1 flight and you didn't get the upgrade? And was this within the 24 hour window before departure?

No, I used the regional before 24 hours, when it went to R1/RN1, and only 2 seats available on the seat map.

I gave up on CPU working on that flight. It confirmed into F immediately.

ok, so now it's less than 100 hours out for the return flight which is showing R9/RN9 and no upgrade yet.

Something has to be wrong here. Why isn't the upgrade clearing? What do I do about it? The return flight is a Q fare, which is expensive in this market.

    thanks ...

mea culpa, the earlier flight is R9/RN9, mine is currently R0/RN0.

I forgot they started an earlier flight when I looked it up.

I'm having the same issue. UA 736 KOA-SFO 6/8. It's been showing R0 until this morning when it went to R9 before the EUA sweep should have happened. Expected my CPU to clear at the T-72 hr sweep but no movement and still showing R9.

The other 3 non-stops have tons of R/RN space.

My flight is R0/RN0 with this fare class availability:

    F9 A9 Z8 P8 Y9 B9 M9 E9 U9 H9 Q9 V9 W9 S9 T9 L9 K9 G9 N9

Checked my reservations, and I'm now in R, so it cleared with no notification. Clearing is good.
