For the longest time, I assumed that unless you own a business (with a tax ID number), you couldn't get a business CC. My friend suggested when applying for a business CC, to input my SS# for the tax ID #. I reluctantly tried it and got approved for a AMEX Delta Business card.

Is this normal and how many of you folks are doing this?

Totally normal and quite common. Anyone with a SS# can declare oneself as the owner of a "sole proprietorship", which is "a type of business entity that is owned and run by one individual and in which there is no legal distinction between the owner and the business." The SS# is thus the same thing as the business tax ID #.

Some sole proprietors also have a federal tax ID number.

I own a rental property. I don't have a tax ID or anything special about it.

Anyone can apply for a separate FTID #, but reasons for doing so have to date are not be compelling.

Put your SS, for the tax ID, and call yourself a sole proprietor you will be fine.

We have a business checking with Chase,
