I'd love to know what subsidy amount AT&T pays to Apple. I don't think they get $649 for a locked iPhone.

Ughh... 649 for a unlocked phone. No thanks.

I'm not a "huge" fan of ATT but I've been with them way back in 2001 with Cingular...
so I got my iphone from them.

I love the iPhone, but NO phone is worth 649 USD.

The price is outragewous but not more so that my easy alternatives. I think I'll buy it. If I were in the US I would not, I'd just jailbreak it, but I have zero use for a long-term US contract, nor the European ones either. The price is steep, but...

I think that's the same price you pay for an unsubsidized iPhone, so while outrageously high it's no different than if you went to the store before to get one without a contract.

With that said, it's obviously a bad deal as Apple is just clearing existing inventory to make room for the next iPhone.

They have been selling unlocked phones in Hong Kong and a few other places since day one. This policy came about because they no longer have single carrier distribution obligations IMO. Anyway, the half-life of a new Apple product is always measured in months. I no longer worry much about versions because of that. Whatever I buy will be obsolete long before I get rid of it. I'm still using a Palm T/X

I'm on the opposite side... I buy early, sell early before "the next one" comes out and at least try not feel like I got fleeced. :)

I sold my iPhone 4 a month ago for $500 and have been using an Android phone. When the new iPhone shows up I'll probably get it, then repeat the same process next year. :)

Most of us in Asia don't mind paying that much anyways.. Since we don't have to deal with the binding plans. I for one if they offer the iPhone 5 version unlocked, will get it in an instant.

BTW, is this only via the apple online store, or are they also selling them unlocked in the actual Apple Stores?

My dilemma is whether to wait for the iPhone 5, or buy the unlocked iPhone 4 now. Logically I would wait, or nto do it at all, but what is logic worth anyway?
