Apple (AAPL) is revving a loyalty program called iPoints as part of a mobile payment system to be launched this year, says RBC Capital Markets.
The loyalty program, says RBC Capital analyst Dan Perlin in a report Thursday, could give Apple an edge over other emerging mobile payments systems from Google (GOOG); startup Square; eBay's (EBAY) PayPal unit; a joint venture formed by phone companies called ISIS; and MCX, a consortium led by retailers Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target (TGT).
Perlin says Apple will be able to leverage its iTunes store.
