App lets airport travelers order food at gate

    HMSHost Corp. said it is expanding a service that lets travelers at airport departure gates place food orders via a mobile software application on Apple and Android smartphones and other devices.
    The Bethesda, Md.-based airport foodservice provider began offering gate-side delivery and take-out with its B4YOUBOARD mobile app in May for Apple devices at Delta’s Terminal 3 at JFK International Airport in New York.
    HMSHost added the service to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport’s Lindbergh Terminal in mid-September, and earlier this week expanded B4YOUBOARD to Android smartphones.

    seems like this needs to live or die on precise timing. Article says order goes right into the kitchen. What happens and who pays when the order doesn't get to the gate in time? What about making order in further in advance for a specific delivery time? Anyone using this yet?

    How much delivery staff do they expect to have? Will they go the pizza route where the delivery guy waits for a batch of orders and then starts the run to the gate(s) or will it be personalized delivery? (yeah, I haven't read the story)

  5. Hi, I'm part of the Airside Mobile team ( B4 You Board app ).

    Timing IS important but not so difficult. The app prompts you to make sure that you have 20 minutes before boarding (although most orders take less than 15 min). If the order doesn't get to the gate in time, the customer gets a refund. Ordering in advance for a specific time is in the pipeline. You can also order for pick-up while in queue with TSA, for example...
