I tried looking at hotels near the SFO International Airport for mid October and it seems that the rates around that period are higher that usual or they have limited availability.

I've been visiting SFO for the past few years around the October period and the prices this year are higher that usual. Btw, I was looking at the Hampton Inns (usual choice) which are great place and a greater value for money. The simple but complimentary hot breakfast helps with my budget as well. I avoid the hotels closer to town due to the pricing and the parking.

Back to the topic, anyone know of any specific event that is causing this limited availability of the hotels?

San Francisco hosts mega conventions or trade shows a couple times a year. I was at the Doubletree SFO during Oracle World and they were sending walk-ins down to San Jose for hotels.

    Any of these dates?

I think that is it. It has a huge list of official hotels for this event https://published-prd.activeevents....014/files/3098/DF14_HotelList_Publishedv2.pdf but apparently with the expected 46,000 attendees on top of the usual visitors, rooms must be in hot demand and a rising tide lifts all boats, in this case, hotel pricing.
