Do any of you MP'ers participate in lending through Kiva? I find it a pretty nice way to do something I feel good about and rack up a few miles (nothing crazy, but every little bit helps). I've been fortunate enough to have all of my money come back so far, which is a nice bonus.

Not sure if this belongs here, as its only loosely miles related. Not quite coins...but what is?

I think one day I will participate in this idea, not just yet though.

I was advising people in Ukraine to apply for micro-loans on Kiva, but I thing most of them either don't trust it or have this ridiculous pride that no-one is actually willing to help them with something.

Yes, I am nearing 100 Kiva loans, and will probably make some more after the 15th when most of my loans do their monthly payback.

  4. I have about 10 Kiva loans, I should probably do more but I have a hard time picking loans to fund for some reason.

I've funded a hundred or so, mostly from rolling over funds after repayment.

YMMV, but I have made 115 loans in total, and have had none default and none are currently delinquent. According to the stats that Kiva is currently showing, 1.07% of loans have defaulted and 2.92% are currently delinquent (though I have had a few that showed as delinquent for couple of months that eventually paid).

151 loans, no defaults yet although there are a couple that might default and 17 delinquent (but I expect most will be repaid albeit late). Thus zero losses so far.

Thanks for pointing to this. I have signed up for Kiva and donated to a couple of entrepreneurs.

I consider Kiva almost a donation. Since I go in with that attitude I'm not as concerned with pay back.
So far I'm at 0% delinquent, 0% default.

This is one area where I think we should maintain the FlyerTalk team. IMHO Kiva is a charitable entity. By sticking with one team we have a better chance to moving up the rankings. It's my hope that as the FT team continues its march upwards, it will attract more attention thus potentially attract more members thus potentially generate more loans for those who really need it.

    P.S. My Kiva stats:

    54 loans
    $708 outstanding
    1.71% delinquency rate
    0.00% default rate

I have one "delinquent" loan which is .22 behind out of $4575.00 total loan

And another which has paid a penny in five months.

So, Kiva has a strange of calculating delinquency to lump those two in the same category.

I have 0.59% delinquency and 0.000% default out of $2600 in loans.

I hope that folks will join the FT team on Kiva rather than starting a new team. The FT team has been growing steadily and is nearing $100,000 in loans.

I thought about setting up a Milepoint team, but I'm sticking it out with my alumni team though the group has disappointed me so far. I'm sure one will pop up at some point.

    31 loans
    $482.61 outstanding
    Total lent $800
    Delinquency rate 0.32%
    Default rate 0.00%

I think I, too, would vote with keeping the FT team together, because this (we) is truly a group who gets a thrill from incremental increases in numbers, and it would be sad to lose that $94,925 in momentum.

I recently joined, but have only made one loan so far. I find the concept interesting :)

Like Grace said, I'd almost consider it a donation. If a borrower defaults then so be it.

I'm in personally and a large portion of the charity proceeds from last years Chicago Seminar DO were directed to Kiva loans. No defaults for mine or the groups donation, and we are relending all proceeds as they are repaid. Together it represents about $1400 in loans outstanding.

Me too. I'm fussy on my loans. But I am inclined to pig farmers. I don't go for people who want to start a shop that sells phones.

I also saw some Americans who want loans. They have good ideas but I prefer to loan to the third world people.

Do many people make a donation to Kiva when they make a loan?

I look at it as a donation as well. I currently have one loan out that is almost paid back.
