Do we have a policy for that?

A friend of mine wanted to register but found that his very unique handle he uses in different forums was allready registered here. he uses a phrase that is very unusual and changed an O to a zero. So this can't be an accident.

I suggest we deal with it on a case by case basis. who can be contacted for something like this?

since presumably 99% of people are coming from FT, this is a real (potential) problem. i was worried about it, because i didnt immediately register, because i was trying to pick password and email.

solution wise, might be tough unless randy still has full admin access at FT, to compare emails etc.

True, it's not an easy task. I suggest that it be dealt with by an admin who contacts both users and tries to see if somebody just "stole" a handle or even tries to impersonate another user.

We're here to help anyone on matters like that and are currently working on two already. We are in the customer service business on things like that so please come forth.

Reply to Kagehitokiri: Well to start with the admin can only act if contacted by a member who thinks he has a right to register under a certain handle. Then he can contact the current owner and the new member and try to find out who has the older "rights".

Also I would not see it as a ft/mp specific task.

Hi Randy - so do you deal with such cases or who could be contacted? I'll send you the users handle via 'Communication' (Do we have a short form for this newer kind of PM functionality...?) :)

I don't really understand what you mean. Do you think I would use ft ressources over here? I would not even dream of doing such an unethical thing!!!

I don't think we should bring activity on another forum into this.

IMO by the reaction (or non-reaction) of two members to the questions of the admin you can probably tell, who is the the real one.

However on not so specific handles like flyA380 or HNL-Flyer it's not so easy if the one first registering with that handle doesn't want to give it up.

I trust the Admins to do the right thing. I see there is no written policy and that the matter might be complicated. So deal with it case-by-case.

i would have to assume randy/etc are using FT PMs.

i could probably do a pretty impressive job impersonating someone. so i would be disturbed if its based on 'verbal arguments' as you suggest. but i would find that unlikely.

whatever theyre doing should probably not be revealed for information security reasons.

i like seeing theyre currently working on 2, less than a week after launch.

Please send them along to be via a "conversation" which is a more dynamic version of private message (PM). The details as you know them although I may be already working on the one you are sending. Thanks for wanting to help, very much appreciated.

ive seen "convo" for "conversation" but may want to wait a while before really using that, to avoid confusing those who havent seen it before

I'll take this opportunity to say that the usability and functionality of the MilePoint conversations is light-years ahead of the FT PMs. Basic concept may be the same, but you can actually conduct a conversation with MilePoint conversations (duh). Two thumbs up for this feature! [IMG] [IMG]

Kind of like a chat, yes, but doesn't require all the participants to be online at the same time.

With the old-style PMs, keeping track of any non-trivial conversation quickly gets to be painful.

another advantage to the conversation function, it does not clutter up a thread with non subject conversations.

The posts about your avatar could have been a conversation and thus avoid cluttering up that thread. It certainly would facilitate reading the thread for those who are browsing.

I don't think this will be that much of a problem. The forum isn't fully public yet and those who care enough about their flyertalk handle will probably have registered it over here by the site is out of beta.
